While the Cardinals held Manca- sola in check, Central Valley's Christian Spaschak stepped up in his place. Spaschak blocked a Cardinals shot attempt to tie the game in the final minute and sank two free throws on the other end to seal the game, finishing with a game-high 16 points. Corning seemed to be doing everything right in a turnover-filled first half. The Cardinals interior passing was superb and Corning built up a nine-point lead at one point. Their sophomore center Michael Shoemaker racked up 11 points and eight rebounds in the first half and the Cardinals led 25-17 at the break. But Shoemaker would produce Corning's only bucket in the third Daily News photo by Rich Greene Corning's Ryan Holland brings the ball up court,Wednesday night, against Central Valley. quarter, which also turned out to be his last points of the game and Cen- tral Valley clawed their way back to 27-25 to begin the fourth quarter. Kody Conner opened the fourth quarter with a jumper as the shot clock expired to tie the game for Central Valley. Following a Corning traveling violation on the other end, Spaschak gave the Falcons a 30-27 lead with a 3-pointer. Corning's senior point guard Ryan Holland would come back with a 3-pointer of his own to tie it. After misses on both ends, Man- casola earned a trip to the foul line and sank a pair of free throws for his first points of the second half. He wasn't done and with 2:03 remaining in the game he finally got his first field goal of the second half to lift Central Valley to a 36-32 lead. Corning's Nick Hoag cut the lead to 36-33 with a free throw on the other end, but Mancasola once again managed to earn a trip to the foul line and sank both free throws for a five-point Falcons lead. Holland then hit his third triple of Sanchez making progress in return from injury the night to cut the lead to 38-36 and the Cardinals had life. Corning's press forced a turnover and the Cardinals had the ball, trail- ing by two points with 40 seconds remaining. They worked it into the paint to Hoag, but Spaschak leaped up and blocked the shot, and sent Central Valley to Friday's title game, where the Falcons will look to defend their section championship. Shoemaker led Corning with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Holland fin- ished with 11 points and Hoag had seven points and 12 rebounds. Warriors beat Hawks ATLANTA (AP) — Dominic McGuire scored no points in only his second start of the season. He drew plenty of praise, though, for his defense and rebounding as a surprise fill-in for Stephen Curry. McGuire, a forward making a start in the backcourt, had 15 rebounds and led Golden State's defensive efforts against Joe Johnson as the Warriors answered a late comeback by Atlanta to beat the Hawks 85-82 on Wednesday night. ''Just incredible,'' Warriors coach Mark Jackson said of McGuire. ''He embodies everything we've preached about since Day 1, and I thought the important thing is to make a statement and to start the guy that has done everything we've asked him to do.'' David Lee scored 22 points, including the go-ahead bas- ket with 30 seconds remaining. The Warriors took the lead early in the second period and protected the lead until Zaza Pachulia scored on a follow-up shot after a miss by Teague with 52 seconds remaining for a 78-78 tie. (AP) — Giants infielder Freddy Sanchez took ground balls at second base and threw to first Wednes- day for the first time since he dislocated his right shoul- der on June 10, a significant moment in his rehab. Sanchez returned to the Follow us on Twitter: @TehamaSports field two days after feeling some soreness in his back. He's not too worried about his short-term prognosis though. He's looking for- ward to being ready by opening day. ''That's the main goal,'' Sanchez said. ''I'm just anx- ious to get out there. Anx- ious is an understatement.'' San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said he hopes to have Sanchez ready to play in a game by the sec- ond week of March. ''It's important the pace picks up a bit,'' Bochy said. ''It would be nice to start getting him some at-bats.'' Sanchez and catcher Buster Posey, also coming off surgery, figure to improve both the Giants' anemic offense and shoddy defense. San Francisco ranked near the bottom in hitting (28th), runs scored (29th), home runs (22nd), and on- base percentage (29th). ''You always talk about defense up the middle,'' Bochy said. ''Every good club is strong up the mid- dle.'' Defensively, the Giants ranked 14th in fielding per- centage and errors, 26th in turning double plays, eighth in stolen bases allowed and fifth in passed balls. The Giants overhauled their up-the-middle defense in anticipation of getting Sanchez and Posey back. Brandon Crawford, who played in 66 games last year, is slated to start the season at shortstop and Angel Pagan, acquired in a trade with the New York Mets, will begin the year in center field. ''I haven't been on a field with a team since the injury,'' Sanchez said. ''It's going to take a while to get my rhythm back batting and throwing. It's good to be out there and working with Crawford.'' Sanchez felt his back lock up on him while field- ing short hops on a back field a couple of days ago, but said it feels fine now. ''I did all my stuff at both minicamps and just started throwing three or four days ago,'' Sanchez said. ''My shoulder is feeling good and I'm excited to get out there.'' McGuire, a fifth-year player from Fresno State, held Johnson to 18 points on 6-of-17 shooting. Curry missed all but the final 3 seconds of the game due to a strained tendon in his right foot. Jackson said he knew after Wednesday night's loss at Indiana he was going to move Ellis from shooting guard to point guard against Atlanta. He said he was ''tossing and turning'' as he tried to pick a new starter at shooting guard. The surprise choice was the 6-foot-9 McGuire. ''I knew exactly what I was going to get from him: Great defense, goes after every rebound, even down the stretch,'' Jackson said. McGuire called his assignment on Johnson ''nothing spe- cial.'' ''The same thing I do every game: I just get down and play defense,'' McGuire said. ''If I'm out there long enough, I'm going to get rebounds, that's guaranteed.'' The Hawks were held to a season-low 33.7 percent shoot- ing as they missed 61 of their 92 shots from the field — many from long range. Hawks coach Larry Drew issued a familiar criticism of his players' shot selection. ''We settled tonight, particularly the first half,'' Drew said. ''I thought we settled for way too many jump shots. We've got to be smarter and understand the flow of the game. It's one thing if you're making shots, but if you're not making shots from the perimeter you can't just settle for jump shots.'' The Hawks also were hurt by poor shooting on free throws, making only 16 of 26 attempts. The Warriors made 16 of 17 free throws. Josh Smith, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds, made only five of 20 shots from the field and four of eight free throws. He made only two of 11 shots in the final period. ''I thought we missed a lot of point-black shots with nobody around,'' Johnson said. ''I'm sure we'll bounce back and have to get the next one, but it was definitely a tough loss for us.'' Pachulia had 13 points and 16 rebounds for Atlanta, Jeff Teague had 15 points. Marvin Williams, who had 11 points and 12 rebounds, was a third Atlanta starter with a double- double. Johnson returned after missing two games and the All-Star game with tendinitis in his left knee. He wore wraps on each knee and said his left knee was ''a little stiff'' at times. Johnson appeared to lack explosion when he missed a layup in the first half after managing only a tentative jump toward the rim. 1B Thursday March 1, 2012 CV knocks out Cards
