In our area, morning sun is best but six hours of afternoon sun is still better than too much shade. The ground should drain well which is diffi- cult with all our clay but a hand full of sand or peat moss can be added to the planting hole to improve drainage. Do not add purchased top soils to dahlia beds unless you are sure that it has not been treated with weed killers. Compost of any type should be avoid- ed. It is best to start applying slug and snail bait two weeks after planting and continue through the season. Spider mites can also be a problem. If your plant looks like it needs water you might have a spider mite invasion. Spray with Bon-meen or any other Miticide or a spray listing spider mites. If old blossoms are removed from the grow- ing plant, it will help to keep your plant strong and blooming late into the season. Cut flowers in the early morning and condition them by placing two-three inches of the cut stem in very hot tap water. This will set the bloom and it should last four to six days. Should you leave your dahlias in the ground or dig them for winter?
