Main - Quartzsite (one block east of Family Dollar) 928-927-6551 New Chamber & Tourism is formed By Shanana Rain BearCat During the Business Mixer on Wednesday, August 5th, a number of local businesses announced the offi cial formation of the Quartzsite Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Center, (QACC&T). Brainstorming sessions began with Steve Poole, of Main Event Showplace, Dennis Keuhl, of Desert Gardens RV Park & Show- grounds, and Phil Cushman, of United Analyst. Poole stated, "From this initial effort has come the re-birth of Quartzsite and a solid group of motivated individuals, businesses, and organizations. Our focus is to promote Commerce and Tourism for the winter and year around businesses of Quartzsite." Local businesses owners, non- profi ts, and the Quartzsite Busi- ness Chamber of Commerce have been working together for several months to create an organization that will serve the unmet needs of the local business community in the Quartzsite area. After many conversations with Business Chamber, it was suggested that the group start their own organization. Paul Winer, co-founder and Board Member of the Quartzsite Business Chamber spoke to the Town Council Tuesday, July 14th. He spoke of the future and the need for a second Chamber for Tourism. He said, "It's very impor- tant we all work together." One of the Quartzsite Chamber & Tourism's goals is to help the community understand the many resources provided by the differ- ent organizations and how they all help the business community and visitors. The new Chamber & Tourism hopes to fi le its articles of incorporation with the state of Arizona later this month. Phil Cushman was elected as Chairperson and Dennis Kuehl is Vice-Chair, with other positions being decided soon. Cushman said, "The conversa- tions that we've been having with businesses show their support and we're very excited to work with the Business Chamber." The Quartzsite Chamber & Tour- ism will be located 1240 W. Main Street, across from McDonald's. The Business Chamber has offered to provide a ribbon cutting cer- emony for the opening, which will be sometime in the Fall. Cushman stated, "We are just getting launched and encourage anyone interested in working with us to visit www.QuartzsiteTourism. com for more information. It's just a home page for now, but it will be expanding quickly with more information. We encourage anyone interested to contact us through our site. Our website will operate as a source for information as well as promotion for our Chamber members." Comments and ideas are welcome from the community. The group wants to strength- en the positive awareness of Quartzsite and La Paz County as a visitor destination to increase revenues and stimulate economic development and growth for local businesses and the community. The next Meet & Greet will be hosted & held at VFW Wed. Sept. 9th at 6pm. La Paz County School Superin- tendent Jacque Price appointed Danielle Miller to the Quartzsite El- ementary School District Governing Board, effective July 29, 2015. Her term runs through the end of 2016, as she replaces Yesenia Jackson, who moved out of the district. Miller attended schools in Ohio and has worked as a medical assistant and offi ce manager prior to moving to Quartzsite, AZ last summer. She is married and has two children who attended elementary school in Quartzsite, Bouse, and Ehrenberg last year. When Superintendent Price posted the position, only one eligible candidate applied, so Quartzsite Elementary District still has one open seat on their school board. The fi ve small districts (not includ- ing Parker Unifi ed District) in the county serve approximately 600 students and require a total of 23 board members, which is a signifi - cant number of seats for districts to keep fi lled. Any resident of the Quartzsite School District who is a U.S. citizen, a registered voter in La Paz County, has resided in the district for at least one year, and is 18 years or older may apply. Employees and their spouses are not eligible. For more information, call the La Paz County Education Service Agency at (928) 669-6183.
