No charge. Come join the fun! (it was on his bucket list!) By Joanne Winer The local VFW Post 769 volun- teers hosted an 80th birthday party for one of the most well known and loved vendors in Quartzsite: Bruce Hull. Bruce came here in 1987 and set up at what was then 4 Corners Swap Meet, now where La Mesa RV lot in on the corner of Main and 95. Bruce had been in the clothing busi- ness for many years, and even owned his own shop in San Pedro, Ca. before coming to Arizona and setting up in Quartzsite. After the swap meet had been sold, Bruce set up at Ty- son's Showgrounds for several more years until ill health took its toll and he had to retire and give it up. Bruce wanted more than any- thing to live long enough to cel- ebrate his 80th birthday with his family and friends. It was on his "bucket list". When his health declined rapidly, it was decided to have his birthday celebration a little early so everyone could gather together with him before his illness took him away from us. He was a veteran of the second world war and served his country very honorably. The VFW joined forces with his family to give him the birthday party he wanted, and although very weak at the time, he ended up having a great time with his fellow veterans, friends and family. The party was held at the VFW Post on June 28. Sadly, he passed away on July 2. Bruce was one of the last of the "old breed" of vendors who came here to enjoy the area and be able to sell in the swap meet 7 days a week. He always had a huge smile on his face, and was always known for his generosity when local non- profi ts needed items for fundrais- ers. He had a great following of customers who looked forward to seeing him every season, and you could always see his big ban- ner "Bruce is Back" and know that he was back in business here in Quartzsite. He used to spend the off-season traveling all along the Colorado River area selling in Yuma, Lake Havasu and other towns until it was time to come DEADLINE : WED. He eventually bought a house on Emelia and lived there for 27 years before his death. Bruce was quite the talker, and loved to chat with his customers, especially the Canadians--about trivia mostly. He had many many friends, from vendors to neighbors, and many came to celebrate his last birthday with him. Paul Winer wrote a song and played at the party and Bruce got a big kick out of it. He is survived by 6 children, 16 grandchildren and 6 great- grandchildren (and 2 ex-wives who also came to the party). He was one of the nicest men you would ever meet, and he will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.
