The Lyre Letter 2 A lpha Chi Omega gave many things to Marilyn Lucas '55, but she's most grateful for the sense of belonging. "There are not many things I would say this about, but if I could go back and be a Gamma Zeta all over again, I would," Marilyn says. Even as a sophomore going through recruitment, she didn't know anyone in ACW. However, the warmth and welcoming atmosphere was what brought her into the sisterhood, and it was what kept her there. She fondly recalls traveling town to town in Kansas, performing skits at alumnaes' houses. She even misses the tight-knit quarters in the old house on Todd Street. There were two sleeping dorms: the "warm one" and the "cold one." She said she was fortunate to be in the warm oneāeven though that meant sharing one closet between 15 women. "Although it was a small space, we loved it. We got along so well, and we were simply a happy group." After receiving her B.S. in dietetic nutrition, she went on to get her master's at the University of Kansas and her Ph.D. at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She worked for 10 years teaching dietetic nutrition, and 30 years at KU Medical Center. ACW positively impacted her career path, and she only hopes that current undergraduates feel the same. Marilyn recently received her 60-year anniversary pin from ACW nationals, and she is more connected than ever. She frequently attends events with the Kansas City alumnae association, and loves every moment of it. "Every Gamma Zeta should find a local alumnae club and join. I couldn't live without my group," she adds. Keeping in contact with her Gamma Zeta sisters is very important as well. She still communicates with Corrine Crumbaker Meyer '54, Dorothy Lodholz Spitzer '55, Joanne Guilfoil Cassetta '55, and Carolyn Chappell Azevedo '56. "Alpha Chi Omega is forever a part of my life. I'm thankful for the continued support and help," Marilyn says. "We will always belong." Marilyn and her husband, Clarence, live in Shawnee Mission, Kan. They have two children, Becky and Betsy, and a 10-year-old granddaughter. "I'll work on her becoming a Gamma Zeta," Marilyn teases. In her spare time, she enjoys going to lunch with her ACW sisters, reading, and playing on the computer. We wanted to give you a small update on the women of Gamma Zeta now that the spring semester has ended. The end of the school year also brings us to say goodbye to some of our amazing sisters so they can start their lives as alumnae. This year, 23 sisters went through Hall of Commitment. We are very proud of them and are eager to see what life has in store for them. Summer is also a great time for our undergraduate sisters because they are continuing to better themselves and will come back with many fascinating stories. By the end of summer, we will be itching to come back to Manhattan for Polish Week and recruitment to reconnect and gain new sisters. Thank you to those who attended Alumnae Day in April. We had a fun time getting to know you and hearing your stories. We wanted to get another date on your calendar for this fall. On October 10, the Kansas State Wildcats are playing the TCU Horned Frogs, and we would like to invite you to come tailgating with us! This weekend is full of many Gamma Zeta events. Friday, October 9, will be fall initiation, and we could use your help initiating all of these women. Also, the next week starts Homecoming, so you can help us kick off that week. Since the time of the game is still to be determined, we will be giving you more details as the time comes closer. But you can expect to find tailgating, food, and socializing with the collegiate women. We hope that you will be able to join us! As always, if you are in Manhattan, make sure you stop by the house!
