Friday, February 10, 2012 – Daily News 5A Education in Tehama County KEEP ON LEARNING Holland named feature teacher Every day, teachers make choices and deci- sions that affect their stu- dents – both directly and indirectly. "When you become a teacher, you have accept- ed the responsibility for teaching every child," says Connie Holland, a teacher at Bidwell School. "School should always be about what is best for the students, period." Holland lives by these words each and every day; it is that dedication that helps her students thrive and has earned her the honor of the Feature Teacher award. The Mercy High faculty, staff, and stu- dents would like to congratulate the winners and thank everyone who purchased tickets, for their sup- port of the 300 Club fundraiser. For the second con- secutive year the small but dedicated student body has rallied to sell all the tickets. Mercy's fundraising efforts enable the school to continue providing tuition assistance to students. Students Jen- nifer Gentry and Nick Feser cheer her on. Ocampo named to senate The College of Saint Mary (CSM) campus and com- munity celebrated the installation of the 2012 Student Sen- ate this past week, including one Los Molinos resident, Francis Ocampo, a Biology major in the class of 2015. As a student senator one pledges to, "Uphold the ideals and traditions of CSM and support the goals and mission of the 2012 Student Senate." Student Senators create, promote and encourage a sense of cooperation between students, faculty and administration. Senators also take part in four committees including Elections, Campus Matters, Queen of Hearts and Spirit. Holland has been teaching for 15 years now and says that she does it because she wants to have a direct impact on shaping future generations. She runs the Learning Center at Bidwell School, which serves about 300 students daily in what she calls tar- geted, small groups. "Mrs. Connie Holland is one of the most impas- sioned teachers I have experienced in the 18 years I have been in edu- cation," said Principal Isaac Scharaga. "She works tirelessly to better the lives of all of the chil- dren who attend Bidwell Elementary School, and volunteers for many dif- ferent functions and pro- jects that are student cen- tered in our community. She understands that through support to chil- dren and families, very high levels of expecta- tions can be met, and the results of the children she works with speak for themselves." Holland credits her successes to the dedica- tion of the entire Bidwell team. "Everyone here con- tributes to the great work of the Learning Center in some way," she said. "Holland is a resource- ful, intelligent, creative and caring individual who believes and lives her life in benefit to others," Scharaga said. "The exam- ple she sets is one that all of us should live by." The feature teacher award is presented month- ly by Superintendent of Schools Larry Champion and Edward Jones Finan- cial Advisor Tyler Smail, for the purpose of recog- nizing highly successful and talented teachers in Tehama County.
