Richard M. Beloit, of Palo Cedro, will share his recently released children's book, "Pinky and Thunder, Royal Rhinos of Africa," with the children of Red Bluff 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat- urday at the Book Barn, 619 Oak St. Beloit and illustrator L. K. Benfer will be present for the meet and greet and book signing event. "Pinky and Thunder, Royal Rhinos of Africa" is a cute fictional story of the challenges and strug- gles of being different. The story takes place in the Limpopo Valley, South Af- rica. It follows the quest of a challenged young Af- rican black rhino to fit in. The little rhino over- comes his challenges in life by b u i l d i n g self-confi- dence and d i s c o v e r - ing his own uniqueness. Beloit used exceptional creativity in gently rein- forcing anti-bullying behav- ior utilizing child-friendly rhinos living and working as a family unit. The book has an unexpected surprise ending. Over the course of a life- time, Beloit told stories to his children, then grand- children and now great grandchildren, sharing sto- ries about life and morals. The author hopes that each child who reads this book will find amusement, but also comfort in discov- ering that we have each been created unique. You can find the book at The Book Barn and Amazon and on the publisher's web- site: www.CrestedCrane- Publishing.com. AUTHOR Great grandfather to share story with children RichardM. Beloit By Christine Lee krlee@chicoer.com @leechris017 on Twitter ORLAND The Orland Art Center is hosting its sixth annual Group Show, a multifaceted art show fea- turing 21 artists from all over Northern California. The reception will be 3-7 p.m. Aug. 7 with re- freshments and music per- formed by Melania Ray- goza. The show encompasses a variety of art mediums that portray a variety of ex- pressions, techniques and themes. There will be unusual sculptures, carved wood pieces, rich oils, acrylic paintings, pencil and charcoal drawings, ink de- signs, pastels and watercol- ors and photographic print images. "It's an honor to be se- lected for the show," said Cheryl Caldwell, a featured artist for the August show. "They don't just take any- one for the show, so it's def- initely an honor." She has an acrylic painting of a horse hung up for the show and has secured a spot next year at the gallery with two other artists which will feature more of her paint- ings of horses. "It's very, very fun," Caldwell said. "The art- ists you encounter are so nice. Artists are like a lit- tle family you don't know until you go and meet them. We all have this thing in common โ€” we have a compulsion to cre- ate and you see these art- ists and see what they're passionate about." Photographer Sharon Barker has three prints for the show โ€” all landscapes of the Arches and Can- yonland national parks in Utah. She's been a photog- rapher for more than 10 years and likes to take ad- vantage of undiscovered areas in Northern Califor- nia where she can capture beautiful landscapes and wildlife, she said. She has two pieces in color capturing des- ert wildflowers, princess plumes and a full moon landing just above an arch during sunset. One photo- graph in black and white captures a storm brewing in the distance with cattle grazing in front of large rock formations in Can- yonland "Landscapes encom- passes so much," Barker said. "I like to find local areas that maybe people don't see when you're driv- ing 60 miles per hour on road and don't see things. I like to find spots where there's not a lot of man- made structures." She said she lives near the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge in Willows where she goes to take pho- tos of wildlife. "I go at dawn and they have a big migration of snow geese and (ducks) and it's impressive," she said. Tom is most excited about making this "Seussi- cal Jr." different than any other with new twists that include; live music, wacky costumes, and colorful set designs. Billheimer has an amaz- ing team that is helping make this performance a success, including music director Josh Hegg who is working hands on with the kids. Josh tells us that this year the live band will be implemented into the mu- sical โ€” something that has not been done before. Choreographing "Seus- sical Jr." is Butte student, Kaila Davidson, who has been choreographing with Blue Room for over five shows.
