Cooler and less humid air is projected to expand from the northern Plains and into the Midwest. Along the boundary between the hot and humid air to the south and cooler, drier air to the north, storms will erupt over parts of the southern Plains. Storms will also drench part of the Southwest. Eurotunnel said it had blocked more than 37,000 such attempts by migrants to reach Britain since Jan- uary. There were conflict- ing numbers of people in- volved Wednesday, rang- ing from 150 to as many as 1,200. But all agreed there had been about 2,000 at- tempts on each of two suc- cessive nights — numbers have been growing expo- nentially as has sense of cri- sis in recent weeks, spurred by new barriers around the Eurotunnel site, labor strife that turned the rails into protest sites for strik- ing workers, and an influx of migrants desperate for a better life. Many British officials have expressed growing alarm at what they see as a potential influx of foreign- ers, although it's not clear how many people have suc- cessfully made the passage. A group of about 25 mi- grants was seen getting off a public bus in Calais on Wednesday with a po- lice officer who left them by the side of the road. Sev- eral said they were return- ing from a night of trying to get across the Channel. Natacha Bouchart, mayor of Calais, said about 150- 250 migrants tried repeat- edly overnight to reach the Eurotunnel. French officials said it was the second night of mass attempts on the tun- nel. Gilles Debove, a po- lice union official, counted about 2,000 attempts for a second night running. De- bove said officers pushing back the migrants counted between 750 and 1,200 peo- ple. Bouchart told France Info radio on Wednesday that migrants are trying to reach England from France "at all costs" — first cross- ing a busy highway and then trying to stow away on trucks waiting to board trains. She says Britain, France and the Eurotun- nel need to work together on the issue. The man killed over- night, believed to be a Su- danese migrant in his mid- 20s, was crushed by a truck as he tried to stow away, De- bove told The Associated Press. Attempts among the thousands of migrants camped in Calais to reach England have intensified with labor strife involv- ing Eurotunnel, which has seen striking ferry workers repeatedly disrupt the rail- way to protest job cuts.
