CUMBERLAND 4-H Volunteer Honored A Cumberland County woman with a long history of volunteering her time to the Cumberland County Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program received the Cumberland County Cares Award on Jan. 17. Eleanore Getz was presented the Cumberland County Cares award by the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners. Getz received the award following a nomination by Angela Shaver, the 4-H youth development extension agent at Cumberland County Cooperative Extension. The Cumberland Cares award recognizes a Cumberland County individual, group or agency which has made an oustanding contribution toward a better quality of life for the county's citizens. Getz, who prefers to be called "mom" by her 4-H family, has served as a Cumberland County 4-H volunteer for 37 years. Her dedicated service to the N.C. Cooperative Extension's 4-H youth development program has made an impact on many lives. She was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2009. "Cumberland County 4-H is fortunate to have volunteers like 'Mom,'" said Shaver. Commissioner Recognized For Public Service Cumberland County Commissioner Kenneth Edge received the M.H. "Jack" Brock Memorial Award from the Mid- Carolina Council of Governments. The award is presented annually to an Cumberland, Harnett or Sampson County. Brock was a founder and leader of the Council of Governments. Edge was presented the award at the Mid-Carolina Council's annual meeting on Jan. 26. Edge has been a Cumberland County commissioner for three terms and has twice served as chairman. He is the current president of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners. A retired school principal, he served on the Cumberland County Board of Education for six years. Edge has been appointed to the Mid-Carolina board of directors. "I was humbled and honored and surprised because I knew nothing about it," Edge said. "It is always good to be recognized by your peers, particularly when they are from three counties." Entries Sought for Air Quality Poster Contest It's time for the 2012 Air Quality Poster Contest. Cumberland County and Fort Bragg elementary school students are encouraged to submit their own creative posters highlighting air quality. Twelve winners will have their posters featured in the 2013 Air Quality Calendar. The contest is open to any Cumberland County or Fort Bragg elementary student. All artwork must be original. The deadline to enter the contest is March 3. The minimum size poster is 9 inches by 12 inches and the maximum size is 22 inches by 18 inches.
