LENNYIGNELZI—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS San Francisco Giants right fielder Hunter Pence drops a pop fly hit by the San Diego Padres' Derek Norris for an error in the fourth inning Wednesday in San Diego. ByAndrewBaggarly BayAreaNewsGroup SAN DIEGO The San Diego Padres wore 1980s uniforms and they clev- erly doctored scoreboard mug shots to match the era. It's all part of the fun here on Way Back Wednesdays. The Brandons took the promotion literally. Brandon Belt and Brandon Craw- ford hit solo home runs, Buster Posey remained a force in the clutch by lin- ing a tie-breaking, two-run double and it came just in time to make a winner of Matt Cain in the San Fran- cisco Giants' 7-1 victory over the Pa- dres at Petco Park. The Giants won two of three in San Diego and five of six on their road trip following the All-Star break. At 51-44, they are seven games over .500 — exactly where they stood before losing seven in a row at the start of July. And while Cain has thrown two clunkers along with two crisp starts since returning from the disabled list, every good one offers promise that he can be the front-of-the rota- tion pitcher the Giants dearly need down the stretch — especially if, as expected, they steer away from add- ing a starting pitcher at the trade deadline. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he expected some ups and downs from Cain upon his return from el- bow surgery and a strained flexor tendon. But he agreed with Cain's comments from over the weekend in Arizona, when he said he cannot give himself the leeway of a settling- in period. "Matty's right, every start is crit- ical," Bochy said. "We're in the back half now. We wouldn't have brought him up if we didn't think we weren't getting Matty back at a time when BASEBALL GiantstopPadres, winseries Belt, Crawford hit solo home runs, Posey adds 2-run double in victory GIANTS7,PADRES1 Up next: Oakland Athletics at San Francisco Giants, 7:15p.m. Friday, TV on NBC Bay Area. THESCORE By Rob Harris The Associated Press ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA FIFA President Sepp Blatter is due in Russia on Thursday for his first overseas trip since the arrests of fellow soccer executives in May left him unwilling to leave the safety of Switzerland. Saturday's qualifying draw in St. Petersburg for the 2018 World Cup will be the 79-year-old Blat- ter's last official event connected to football's showcase tournament before he prematurely leaves of- fice in February. Although Blatter has not been accused of wrongdoing by Amer- ican or Swiss authorities, the re- percussions of the corruption investigations convinced the president to hastily announce resignation plans last month just four days after his re-election, and to stay in Switzerland. Since May 27 — when police in Zurich arrested some of Blat- ter's close associates on behalf of the U.S. and seized data from FIFA headquarters — Blatter has FIFA INVESTIGATION Blatter heads off to Russia amid crisis By Jamey Keaten The Associated Press PRALOUP,FRANCE The speedom- eter clocked between 30 and 37 miles per hour as the pine trees whipped by, and the riders leaned left to right and back again to ne- gotiate the snaking, bumpy de- scent. Winning the Tour de France isn't only about having the abil- ity to get uphill fast. You've got to have nerves of steel going down- hill too. Chris Froome proved Wednes- day that he's got both. The 30-year-old Briton re- tained the leader's yellow jersey as the Tour sped toward its cre- scendo in the Alps. The 17th stage included a har- rowing 10-mile descent that dealt perhaps the final blow to Alberto Contador's distant hope of a third Tour victory and doused the am- bitions of promising French rider Thibaut Pinot for a stage win. Similar to a CrossFit com- petition, the workouts at the Smokin' Hot Throw Down were unknown to the competi- tors until a few days before the contest and there were novice and elite classes. The workouts consisted of running a mile carrying 25 pounds, pull-ups, dead lifts, thrusters, burpees, kettle bell snatches, cleans, push-ups, box jumps, wall ball shots, sit-ups and kettle bell swings. Each workout was scored on a consistent point system and added for a total score af- ter five events to determine placing. "This was definitely one of my favorite events we have ever hosted," said Gen- eral Manager Troy Lalaguna. "Nine women ranging from 17 to 56 years old gave absolutely every last ounce of effort they had." Third place in the novice class went to Julie Hablit- zel, who also won the mas- ters class, second place went to Cassi Vacek, and first place went to Fries. Third place in the Elite di- vision went to Michelle Cantu, second went to Erin Eicholtz and first place to Anderson. First place in the Junior di- vision was won by K.K. Gib- son.
