The elections include all nine municipalities in the county plus the Eastover Sanitary District Board. The Board of Elections is located at 227 Fountainhead Lane in the E. Newton Smith Center. Call 910-678-7733 for information. The Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District awarded two high school students with scholarships for the 2015 Resource Conservation Workshop at N.C. State University. Katherine "Katie" Pitchford, a rising junior at Jack Britt High School, and Taylor Blauser, a rising junior at Cape Fear High School, were presented $575 scholarships to attend the workshop held June 21-26. The week-long course in Raleigh included hands-on participation in a wide range of conservation topics and exposed students to career opportunities in the management of natural resources. The scholarships paid for registration, lodging, food and travel expenses. Pitchford and Blauser joined other scholarship recipients from across North Carolina to learn about environmental conservation and careers. The group visited a water treatment plant, educational forest, university conservation projects and met representatives from natural resource management agencies. Pitchford is the daughter of Keith and Kay Pitchford of Fayetteville. Blauser is the daughter of Harlan and Lisa Blauser of Autryville. Soil and Water Awards Scholarships The Register of Deeds office is holding its annual school supply drive for homeless Cumberland County school children through Aug. 3. Individuals, businesses, groups and churches are encouraged to give. There are approximately 650 homeless children in the school system. Donated items can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Register of Deeds office in Room 114 of the Cumberland County Courthouse, 117 Dick St. The deadline to drop off items is Aug. 3. The following school supplies are needed: pencils, pens, notebooks, rulers, composition books, folders, notebook paper, pencil sharpeners, erasers, glue sticks, crayons, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand sanitizer and toothbrush cases. In addition to school supplies, gift cards or cash donations will be accepted. Checks will not be accepted. Once all the school supplies are collected, they will be turned over to the Fayetteville Police Department and Cumberland County Schools for distribution. The Register of Deeds office would like to fill bags for each homeless school student in the county. "We would like to thank everyone for their support in the past and thank them for their consideration this year," said Register of Deeds Lee Warren.
