CHESTER The Lassen National Forest Almanor Ranger District plans to im- plement a prescribed burn Wednesday, June 17. The "Bobcat Burn" will take place south of Lake Almanor and northeast of Butt Valley Resevoir in an area that was severely burned during the 2012 Chips Fire. The remain- ing snags have been felled, creating concentrations of woody debris scattered throughout the units. "This is an area where equipment could not be effectively used to reduce dead and down fuels," said Forest Service Fuel Techni- cian Eric Kronner, who will manage the burn. "There are many dead trees on the ground, and this burn will reduce that remaining fuel." The size of the burn is estimated to be 110 acres and will be highly visible throughout the Almanor Basin, including State Route 89 and the town of Chester. Depending upon air quality, the burn could take two days to complete. "We deliberately waited until burn conditions were favorable," said Kronner. "The drier the fuel, the bet- ter, so that smoke emissions are minimized. Now the weather is hot enough and the fuels are dry enough that all the remaining dead trees on the ground will be consumed." The Forest Service will replant new trees in the area this autumn. LASSEN FOREST Burn planned today near Lake Almanor Mt. Lassen was again active yesterday afternoon, and beginning about one o'clock continued to pour large quantities of smoke from its numerous craters for several hours. There was not a regular eruption, or throwing out of a high column of steam but close observers of the moun- tain's activities say that there was a much larger percentage of smoke in yesterday's outpourings than on any previous out- breaks. — June 17, 1915 100 YEARS AGO...
