Ontheair By Andrew Baggarly BayAreaNewsGroup SAN FRANCISCO It can- not be easy to hold a hit- ter's meeting, try to pump up a struggling lineup and send a positive message while Hunter Pence sits in a corner with his hand in a splint. The Giants received bad news on Pence but a good result on the field Tuesday afternoon. After learning that they'll have to turn around their offensive dol- drums at home without their energetic right fielder for awhile longer, they did enough to claim a 6-2 vic- tory over the similarly struggling Seattle Mari- ners at AT&T Park. Matt Duffy hit a two- run home run as part of a three-hit afternoon, Tim Lincecum (7-3) crept through 52/3 innings and the Giants bullpen was masterful while protect- ing the Seattle native's first victory over his hometown team. Casey McGehee's pinch double brought in two in- surance runs in a three-run eighth inning as the Giants snapped a nine-game los- ing streak at home — their longest since 1940 — over which they had been out- scored 45-17. "Timmy pitched well and the bullpen, what an incredible job," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's a good win. Believe me, these are tough to go through." The Giants (35-31) won't have Pence on their upcom- ing five-game road trip to Seattle's Safeco Field and Dodger Stadium. They probably won't have him for most — if not all — of their next homestand, ei- ther. He will spend at least five to seven days with his left wrist in a splint be- fore he can be cleared to try swinging a bat again. That was the advice of the Giants medical staff after doctors reevaluated Pence on Monday. "We need to get this ten- dinitis cleared up," Bochy said. The Giants already lost Pence for the first 36 games of the season because of a forearm fracture he sus- tained when hit by a pitch in an exhibition game March 5. The bone healed but a callous that formed at the fracture site is causing the tendon irritation. The Giants are 23-25 in the games Pence has missed because of injury, and 12-6 with him. INTERLEAGUE Gia nt s bea t Ma ri ne rs but Pence gets bad news Burns, playing because Coco Crisp is on the dis- abled list, has a .308 bat- ting average, .355 on base percentage, 24 runs scored and 13 steals in 15 at- tempts. He's even better in Kazmir starts since Crisp went on the DL, averaging .370 in those games with four of his steals. "He's great to have be- hind you," Kazmir said. "The biggest thing is to see how much he's progressed since he's gotten here. It's cool to see him make those catches. It's a lot of fun for me to be on the pitchers' mound to watch him do what he's been doing." The thing is, Burns wasn't supposed to be here this soon. He's going to be 26 in a couple of months, but he'd never played a full season at Triple-A. This was supposed to be that season. Then Crisp got hurt. "I would have said Sep- tember at the earliest, based on what I saw last year," Melvin said. "He had a great spring for us, but a good full year at Tri- ple-A would have been nice. When he had him here originally we didn't figure on him being here this long, but all he's done since he's gotten here is perform." A's FROM PAGE 1 kicks. The win sent the United States through as the leader of its group for the sixth time in seven Wom- en's World Cups. The team heads to Edmonton, Al- berta, for the first match of the knockout stage. The opponent has not been de- termined. Nigeria, which has won seven of nine African championships, has been to every World Cup since it started for the women in 1991. The Super Falcons were eliminated after the loss to the United States af- ter playing to a 3-all draw with Sweden in the opener and falling 2-0 to Austra- lia. The U.S. opened Group D with a 3-1 victory over No. 10 Australia, before playing to a 0-0 draw with No. 5 Sweden. Morgan hadn't started a match since April. The speedy 25-year-old played 12 minutes as a sub in the draw with Sweden. Wambach also came in as a sub in the match against Sweden last Friday. It was the first time she had played off the bench at a World Cup since her first in 2003. Wambach, who didn't score in the first two U.S. group stage matches, had never gone without a goal in the opening round in four World Cup appear- ances. World Cup FROM PAGE 1 JONATHAN HAYWARD — THE CANADIAN PRESS United States' Abby Wambach celebrates her goal with teammate Megan Rapinoe during the first half Tuesday in Vancouver, New Brunswick, Canada kick Klay Thompson was held to five points and fouled out, the Warriors could not be stopped and showed just how well- rounded the Warriors were. The Warriors clinched the championship with a decisive victory much like the ones they had all through a 67-win regular season. The Warriors domi- nated the first quarter and led 28-15, with Iguodala once again starting in the Warriors' small lineup and serving as the sparkplug. This time, the Cavaliers kept Timofey Mozgov in the game to guard Iguo- dala, who missed his first three attempts with the 7-foot-1 center daring him to shoot before finding his rhythm. Iguodala hit three of his next four jump shots, in- cluding a 3-pointer that started an 8-0 run to fin- ish the quarter. Festus Ezeli had a dunk, and Harrison Barnes was good from long distance to put the Cavaliers' backs against the wall. The Cavaliers com- mitted a whopping nine turnovers in the quar- ter, including three shot- clock violations in the first eight minutes as the War- riors made them pay for attempting to slow down the pace of the game. When James Jones hit three free throws and James then beat the shot clock with a 3-pointer to start the second quar- ter, Leandro Barbosa re- sponded with a shot from beyond the arc of his own. James, who started the game 2 for 6 from the field while being guarded by Iguodala, kept coming. He hit a 3-pointer to start an 8-2 run that cut the War- riors' lead to 45-43 at half- time. The Warriors gave ma- jor minutes to Shaun Liv- ingston after Iguodala committed his third foul, as he took on the defensive assignment against James. Barbosa also played as much in the first half as Klay Thompson, who com- mitted three fouls in 10 minutes. As Mozgov protected the paint and Green bat- tled him inside, the War- riors had difficulty scor- ing inside. They started missing jump shots too with Thompson out of the game and were 6 for 22 from the field in the quar- ter. The Cavaliers crawled back into the game by dominating the glass and causing foul trouble. James had 15 points and eight rebounds, Tristan Thompson had 11 points and seven rebounds and Mozgov had seven point and nine rebounds by half- time. Mozgov and Tristan Thompson scored consec- utive baskets to start the third and give the Cav- aliers the lead briefly, but Barnes hit his third 3-pointer of the game to put the Warriors back on top. Iguodala had a dunk, and Green hit a 3-pointer to give the Warriors a 53- 47 lead. Festus Ezeli, who got the minutes over cen- ter Andrew Bogut, com- pleted an alley-oop dunk and then threw down a vi- cious putback for a 3-point play that pushed the lead to 14 points.
