JUNE 17-23, 2015 UCW 17 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Just because school is out doesn't mean that reading should stop. During the summer local libraries offer fun opportunities for students of all ages to engage in reading. Summer is the time to explore new interests and new stories. Libraries encourage this sort of intellectual exploration in a fun, cheap and safe way. The Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center offers a Summer Reading Club that includes prizes for readers that meet their reading goals. Each age group in the club has suggested titles and participants of all ages are invited to register and then continually submit their reading logs. This year the focus of the program is on heroes of every kind. The theme for kids up to age 11 is "Every Hero Has a Story." Readers are eligible to receive prizes when they reach four, eight, 12 and 24 hours of reading. The prizes are toys, books, superhero book bags and a Reading Super Hero Certificate. Time can be added for having people read to them, reading on their own and attending library programs. The reading theme for teens ages 12-18 is "Unmask!" Participants become eligible for sunglasses after the first five hours of reading and after five more hours spent in a fantastic book they could receive ear buds with an ID holder or a chance to win a $25 or $50 gift card. For more chances to win prizes readers can attend special library events. The adult theme is "Escape the Ordinary!" When adults read five books they earn a tote bag and are entered into a drawing for a $50 or $100 Amazon gift card. After reading three more books, there is a second drawing for a $50 gift card and multiple entries are allowed. The program also helps to broaden reading horizons by sharing reading lists and reviewing finished books. All prizes are limited to one per person and available while supplies last. For more information, or to register, visit http://www.cumberland.lib.nc.us/ccplsite/content/ summer-reading-club-all-ages or call 910-223-0431. The program lasts until August 15. The Hoke County libraries are also hosting a super hero themed Summer Reading Program from June 1 until August 7. For recording their efforts on reading logs, readers receive opportunities to win prizes and enjoy fun new titles. The summer programming throughout the summer has fun in store for attendees, too. For preschool and elementary aged students (0-12) programs are on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. On June 23, there is R-E-A-D-I-N-G with "Ronald McDonald," June 30 is Pets to the Rescue!, July 7 is Be a Nature Superhero, July 14 is Undercover Reptiles, July 21 is What's Your Superhero, July 28 is Growing up in the Animal World, and August 4 is Super Hero Training Course.
