Iknow"hate"isa strong word, but that's how I feel about trash. Can't stand it. But my loathing for trash is nothing compared to Lau- ren Singer (www.trash- isfortossers. com), who has been trash- free for two years. It's hard to imagine such a thing, but after hearing her story, she got my attention. The entire amount of trash Lauren has produced in 24 months fits into a pint-size Mason jar. I can't say I'm anywhere close to Lauren when it comes to trash. I'm in that stage where I need a proper trash receptacle strategically located by my desk and in every other room of the house and ga- rage as well. The most im- portant receptacle is in the kitchen. It needs to be sub- stantial in size, handy by location, as attractive as possible, impeccably clean and covered. I have tested, tried and or reviewed every kind of trash receptacle in my search for the most perfect product out there. I have come to the well-educated opinion that stainless steel trashcans by Simple Hu- man are the very best. I have the 30-litre/8 gal- lon round step can model (www.everydaycheap- skate.com/stepcan) in my kitchen. This beauty fits in a cor- ner, against a wall — just about anywhere. It has a removable rigid liner for easy cleaning. The steel pedal is sturdy, and the lid gives a smooth, silent close every time. It does not show fingerprints, which is also a big deal for me. As much as I love this can, it comes with a prob- lem: expensive trash bag refills. The folks at Sim- ple Human insist that I need to use the bags de- signed especially for this can. And boy, are they ex- pensive — at least $.25 per bag. You know me — I'm al- ways looking for a cheaper alternative, and that's what I did for my lovely stainless steel trash can. I decided to use Kirk- land Drawstring Kitchen Bags instead of the Simple Human brand, at about $.10 per bag. I get these at Costco, but Kirkland brand products are also available online without a Costco membership. This is a cheaper alter- native for sure, but as I learned quickly, not so at- tractive. Suddenly, I realized why Simple Human had to make special bags for this receptacle and why the rigid liner in a Simple Hu- man trash can has a hole at the top at the back of the liner. Bingo! That's is the secret. Let me explain how to use that hole to make an alternative bag work per- fectly: 1. Notice that a Kirk- land bag has seams on two sides with the drawstrings in the middle front and back. 2. Grab the top of one of the seams and tie a knot. 3. Place the bag in the rigid liner, then feed the tail of the knot from the outside through that hole and pull it inside the can, including the knot itself. 4. Stretch the top of the bag around the liner, which will now fit snuggly, and push the bulk of the bag into the liner. 5. Place the liner back into the can. Voila! A perfect fit that completely hides the trash bag with the lid closed and leaves the drawstrings in- tact for easy removal when the can is full. I'm a bit jealous know- ing that Lauren Singer does not spend money on trash cans. She doesn't waste money on trash bags either. Lauren's example has given me a renewed desire to cut down on trash in ev- ery way possible. In the meantime, I couldn't be happier with my Simple Human can and super cheap trash bags. EVERYDAYCHEAPSKATE The perfect kitchen trash can and bags, too Mary Hunt The Los Molinos Ma- sonic Family Center was the site of a 90th birthday party for Corning resident Bucky Bowen on Saturday, June 13. Master of Ceremonies Dean Cofer said that be- tween 75 and 100 people attended the event. The afternoon event kicked off with a telephone call from Rep. Doug La- Malfa, who was unable to attend due to being with an honor flight trip for vet- erans in Washington, D.C. LaMalfa phoned Bucky during the event to con- gratulate him and then led the assembled guests in the singing of happy birthday. Bowen celebrated 36 years of marriage to his wife, Gena, on June 8, and he is a long-time Tehama County resident locally renowned for his support of veterans and involve- ment in non-profit organi- zations. A World War II veteran, Bucky has for the past 17 years served as the Mas- ter of Ceremonies for an- nual commemorations of Memorial Day and Veter- ans Day and other patri- otic events in Corning; and has been active in the Vet- erans of Foreign Wars, Red Bluff Elks, Corning Rotary and the Corning Exchange Club. Several well-known state, county and city offi- cials, including Supervisors Burt Bundy, Steve Chamb- lin and Dennis Garton, State Sen. Jim Nielsen, Red Bluff Mayor Clay Parker, Tehama County Clerk and Recorder Jennifer Vise and Corning Fire Chief Martin Spannaus and Council- woman Darlene Dickinson, joined family and friends to help celebrate Bucky's birthday. Presentations honoring Bucky's 90th birthday and years of service were given to him by Bundy, Nielsen, LaMalfa, California Wom- an's Club Vice President Tony Lima and Cofer. CHICO The Butte Envi- ronmental Council and Or- chard Supply Hardware in- vite the public to an "Ex- treme Garden Makeover" at the Oak Way Commu- nity Garden in Chico 5-6 p.m. Thursday, June 18. The council and the store will show the commu- nity how to conserve water in times of drought, includ- ing demonstrations on us- ing drip irrigation, mulch- ing and other water con- servation techniques, as well as a Q&A session with experts, and garden gate prizes and coupons. The Oak Way Commu- nity Garden is on the cor- ner of West 8th Avenue and State Route 32 in Chico, and is one of two commu- nity gardens established by the council in the last few years. The community gardens utilize unimproved land owned by the city of Chico to increase access to gardening and fresh vege- tables for Butte County res- idents. The city provides a no- cost lease to the council. In addition to leasing in- dividual plots, the council has partnered with Dis- ability Action Center — formerly Independent Liv- ing Services of Northern California — to construct a universal access "Every- one's Garden" within the Oak Way Community Gar- den. The council continues to respond to the high com- munity demand for edu- cational workshops, par- ticularly on water conser- vation. The council has already hosted 6 such work- shops over the past two years, including demon- stration projects in which two lawns were converted to water conserving, bird- friendly native landscapes. Due to the ongoing Cal- ifornia drought, the coun- cil is instituting a "no over- head watering" policy at both of its community gar- dens. At the workshop orga- nizers will makeover two 15' x 15' garden plots and participants will learn how to achieve water conser- vation and save money in their own gardens.
