Zach Whitten, principal and teacher, said the event included carnival games and food but the primary goal was to get informa- tion to families about children's activities available during the summer. In addition to the school's sum- mer Shakespeare and space sci- ence programs, various organiza- tions had booths set up and infor- mation to hand out. The Sacramento River Discov- ery Center helped children build their own bird feeders using re- purposed household items and offered information about its weekly summer camp programs that start this week. The Tehama County Library is offering its summer reading pro- gram called Read to the Rhythm with a musical theme starting this week in the Los Molinos, Corning and Red Bluff branches. COUNTRY FAIR Lotsto do for kids this summer By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Emergency per- sonnel were called out at 8:47 p.m. Friday for a water rescue in which one man was pulled from the Sacramento River near the Sycamore Grove Boat Ramp on Sale Lane. Cal Fire received a call and responded to find a man at the boat ramp who had been res- cued by citizens after he tried to investigate and retrieve a raft from the river, said Cal Fire Battalion Chief Matt Chamblin. When the man, who had been in the water for at least five min- utes, came ashore, he told res- cuers he believed a woman and child were on the raft, Chamb- lin said. The Tehama County Sheriff's Office was called out to search the waters with its boat along with a California Highway Pa- trol helicopter. JULIE ZEEB — DAILY NEWS By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter REDBLUFF The Tehama County Library is kicking off its "Read- ing to the Rhythm" theme sum- mer reading program with a special performance by Unit Souzou, a Portland-based Taiko drumming group, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the State Theatre. The group and the meaning of its name, Souzou, can be writ- ten in three ways, but mean cre- ation, imagination and noise. The latter refers to the force by which ideas are born and take shape in the world. The group hopes to inspire children over the summer, said acting Librarian Sally Ain- sworth. Unit Souzou, co-di- rected by Michelle Fujii and Toru Watanabe, is known for its groundbreaking fusion of Taiko drumming and Japanese folk dances. "This is the first time we've had Taiko drumming in Red Bluff," Ainsworth said. "It's first for the kids, but it is open to the public and it is free." As many as 34 people planned to attend, said board member Sarah Casia, but the heat reduced the turnout. Still, a raffle of more than a dozen donated items was doing well. After completing the 1.5-mile circuit, Willow headed straight for a small pool to cool off.
