Evergreen Middle School applied for and received Cal- ifornia Gold Ribbon Schools Program Award, the Title 1 Academic Achievement Award and is being recog- nized as one of 373 Califor- nia Gold Ribbon Schools for 2015. "This award is a direct reflection of hard work, dedication and vision of our school's educational com- munity" said Principal Fe- licia Ross. Evergreen Middle School has also been selected by the Campaign for Busi- ness and Education Excel- lence (CBEE) as one of 1,851 public schools in California to receive the title of 2014 Honor Roll school. Schools receiving this distinction from the Cali- fornia business community have demonstrated consis- tent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achieve- ment levels over time and reduction in achievement gaps among student pop- ulations. For High Schools, the Honor Roll recogni- tion also includes mea- sures of college readiness. The CBEE Honor Roll is comprised of two different awards, the Star Schools Award (1,328 schools) and Scholar Schools Award (523 schools). The business community is also recognizing a subset of the Honor Roll that has both high percentages of low-income students and high levels of math and sci- ence achievement. STEM — Science, Technology, Engi- neering and Math — Honor Roll schools, including Ev- ergreen, will receive special recognition of their accom- plishments. HONORED Evergreen Middle School receives awards REDDING Simpson Univer- sity's Amy Haley of Cotton- wood received two awards for the 2014-15 school year, Spanish Student of the Year and English Major of the Year. Haley double-majored in English and Spanish. The English Major of the Year award was created to acknowledge outstanding academic work and mean- ingful contributions to Simpson University's De- partment of English. The Spanish Student of the Year award is given to a student for dedication, hard work and excellence in the particular major. "Amy started in the Span- ish program as a minor, converted to a double ma- jor last year and stayed on an extra semester to com- plete the requirements," said Debora Rager, assis- tant professor of Spanish. "Her grades were always outstanding." Haley was inducted into the Alpha Chi National Honor Society, presented at the annual Simpson Univer- sity Student Research Sym- posium, and served as a teaching assistant. She was a tutor in the Simpson Uni- versity Writing Center. Haley has served as a member of the Residence Life staff for four years and was a member of a World- SERVE team in El Salvador in 2013. SIMPSON UNIVERSITY Amy Haley receives multiple academic awards The Associated Press BLOOMINGTON, IND. Ernie Pyle's statue has filed a cor- rection. The bronze statue of the famed World War II jour- nalist on the Bloomington campus of Indiana Uni- versity had misspelled the word "correspondent" by dropping an "r." But on Wednesday, a bronze artist from Detroit fixed the typo- graphical error. The work was done by Giorgio Gikas, an art con- servator with Venus Bronze in Detroit, The (Blooming- ton) Herald Times (http:// bit.ly/1IJb25b ) reported. University officials found the mistake in October, two days before the sculpture was to be formally dedi- cated. The statue depicts Pyle sitting on an ammunition box with his typewriter, notes and a coffee cup on a table. Sculptor Tuck Lang- land, an Indiana University- South Bend professor emer- itus of sculpture, has said the scene is meant to show how Pyle spent so much time during the war with average soldiers. The school commis- sioned the larger-than- life piece as a way to pay tribute to Pyle, who at- tended the university in the 1920s. It sits outside the Indiana University Media School. It's not the first time an object inspired by Pyle's heroism has needed a cor- rection. In 2002, toy maker Hasbro Inc. produced new packaging for a G.I. Joe doll modeled after the war correspondent because the original packaging said Pyle attended Indiana State University. Pyle, who grew up near Dana, left Indiana Univer- sity in 1923, just short of finishing a journalism de- gree.
