ByIvanSekretarev The Associated Press DZHEZKAZGAN, KAZAKH- STAN A three-person crew from the International Space Station landed safely in the steppes of Kazakh- stan on Thursday after a longer-than-expected or- bital stint. NASA astronaut Terry Virts, Samantha Cristo- foretti of the European Space Agency and Russia's Anton Shkaplerov returned to Earth after 199 days on the station, nearly a month longer than planned. Because of the delayed return, Cristoforetti, an Italian, has now spent more continuous time in space than any other woman, sur- passing by several days the mark set by a NASA astro- naut in 2007. The trio's Soyuz capsule landed on schedule at 7:44 p.m. local time about 90 miles southeast of the city of Dzhezkazgan, in what a NASA commentator de- scribed as a textbook home- coming. After descending slowly, the craft touched down softly on the sun-drenched steppe. Russian helicopters quickly delivered search and rescue crews to help the astronauts get out of the capsule and quickly check their condition. The smiling astronauts sat in reclining chairs, adapting to Earth condi- tions after months in zero gravity and speaking to doctors and space officials. SPACE STATION 3 astronauts return to Earth safely By Jamey Keaten The Associated Press PARIS The co-pilot who crashed a Germanwings jet into the Alps feared that he was losing his eyesight, and some of the many doctors he consulted felt he was un- fit to fly, a French prosecu- tor said Thursday. The doctors didn't report their concerns to Andreas Lubitz's employers, how- ever, because of German pa- tient privacy laws, Marseille Prosecutor Brice Robin told reporters in Paris. Robin couldn't confirm whether Lubitz's vision trou- bles were real or imagined. Robin met with families of victims Thursday and up- dated reporters on the sta- tus of the investigation into the March 24 crash, which killed all 150 people aboard. Families are just starting to receive remains of their loved ones and will start holding burials in the com- ing days and weeks. Robin said the investi- gation so far "has enabled us to confirm without a shadow of a doubt ... Mr. Andreas Lubitz deliberately destroyed the plane and de- liberately killed 150 people, including himself." Investigators say Lubitz locked the pilot out of the cockpit and flew the plane into a French mountainside, after having researched sui- cide methods and cockpit door rules and practiced an unusual descent. ALPS CRASH Prosecutor: Co-pilot feared blindness By Robert Burns The Associated Press NAPLES, ITALY The Pen- tagon's top general said Thursday the U.S. mili- tary's reach could extend even further into Iraq if the anti-Islamic State cam- paign gains momentum, and he held out the pos- sibility of eventually rec- ommending to President Barack Obama that U.S. troops take on the riskier role of calling in airstrikes. Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the White House's announce- ment Wednesday that up to 450 more U.S. troops would be sent to Iraq to in- vigorate its flagging cam- paign against the Islamic State is a natural exten- sion of U.S. assistance. He said the support hub the troops will set up will not produce instant results but may serve as a model to be replicated elsewhere in Iraq, possibly requiring even more U.S. troops. "The campaign is built on establishing these lily pads, if you will, that al- low us to continue to en- courage the Iraqi secu- rity forces (to move) for- ward, and as they go forward there may be a point where" additional such U.S. hubs are called for to enable the Iraqis to succeed, he told report- ers traveling with him to Naples, where he spoke to American troops and conferred with their com- manders. "Sure, we're looking all the time at whether there might be additional sites necessary. It's another one of the options that we're considering." He added: "It's very practical, looking at geographic locations, road networks, airfields, places where we can actu- ally establish these hubs." Dempsey said he has not recommended putting U.S. troops closer to the battle- field to call in airstrikes — a step that critics of the current U.S. approach say is overdue, even though it raises the risk of American casualties. But he point- edly held out the possibil- ity that it may become nec- essary. "We continue to plan for and ensure that that option is available should it be necessary to have to ensure Iraqi success," he said, adding, "We may reach that point." Asked why he has not yet recommended it, Dempsey said he believes it could backfire if not done for the right reasons. "For discreet, limited of- fensive operations where Iraq security forces have the momentum I think there is a possibility we'll do that at some point," he said. "But as I've said, I just don't think we're there yet." Dempsey said the use of American troops to call in airstrikes could even happen in the push to re- take Ramadi, a city lost by Iraqi forces who had not received U.S. training, or in a counteroffensive to oust the Islamic State from other key cities like Mosul or Beiji. But to use U.S. troops in that role on a reg- ular basis would discour- age the Iraqis "from re- ally getting serious about restoring their own secu- rity," he said. Dempsey spoke the day after the Obama admin- istration announced that U.S. troops will establish a new base at al-Taqqadum, situated between Ramadi and Fallujah, both Islamic State-controlled cities in Anbar province, to advise Iraqi forces and help mobi- lize and integrate a larger number of Sunni tribal fighters. "Is this a game changer? ... No. It's an extension of an existing campaign that makes the campaign more credible. The game chang- ers are going to have to come from the Iraqi gov- ernment themselves," Dempsey said. He did not predict the Iraqis will suc- ceed but said they deserve more time. "I just don't think we should be giving up on the government of Iraq's abil- ity to conduct this cam- paign, with our help," he said. Dempsey said the mis- sion for U.S. forces at al- Taqqadum "first and fore- most" will be to assist the Iraqi military in organiz- ing and executing its coun- teroffensive, while encour- aging greater Sunni in- volvement.
