MU MESSENGER 4 "When e-mail became popular, a few of us really started reaching out. At that time, it was so much easier to keep in touch. Before we knew it, we were planning annual trips together," Martha said. "It is so amazing that even though we are now in our 60s, when we get together, it's like no time at all has passed." Martha splits her time between Florida and Oklahoma and stays connected to DG through an alumnae group in Oklahoma City. She retired from Chesapeake Energy Corporation and loves to travel. She is planning trips to Africa and Antarctica this year and is applying to be a volunteer at the Rio Olympics. Her philanthropic work is significant with areas of concentration in public health and animal welfare. Martha can be reached at marthaburger1218@gmail.com. Martha Burger '71 Alumna Spotlight (Continued from page 3) M ore than 1,700 miles separate the chapter house on Providence Road and Alpha Nu's facility at the University of Southern California. The differences between the campuses and the students that occupy them would likely create a difficult transition for most students, but Kathryn Bell Gary '40 quickly found a connection. Kathryn arrived at the University of Missouri as a junior after spending two years at Kansas City Junior College. Within her first few weeks in Columbia, Kathryn had already created a lifetime of memories. She vividly remembers her recruitment experience and the first time she walked in the door of one of the most beautiful homes she had ever seen. Mu chapter instantly became a home for Kathryn. But when her father died unexpectedly during her junior year, Kathryn and her mother moved to California, where the family had property and many friends. After arriving in Los Angeles, Kathryn introduced herself to the women of Alpha Nu. They invited her to help with their recruitment parties and affiliate with the chapter. Kathryn was happy to bring new women into the Delta Gamma sisterhood but wanted to maintain her Mu membership. Despite her limited time in Columbia, that year was enough to spark a lifelong commitment to Delta Gamma. Kathryn graduated from University of Southern California in 1941 and was married a year later. Once her children were in school, Kathryn joined Pasadena alumnae chapter, where she served as president from 1957-59. Her affiliation with Pasadena chapter also allowed her to attend the first Fraternity Convention and befriend the advisory team chairman (ATC) for Alpha Nu. The ATC invited Kathryn to work as a chapter adviser, which opened the door to local and international offices. "When she invited me to work as an adviser there, I felt that it was an opportunity for me to repay their kindness to me as a collegian," Kathryn said. "I served several years as recruitment adviser, then advisory team chairman for their board. I found I enjoyed working with the women so much." Kathryn continued her service to Delta Gamma Fraternity as Province Collegiate Chairman from 1958-1962, VP: Collegians from 1962-68, and culminated her work with Delta Gamma as Fraternity President from 1972-1974. As Fraternity President, Kathryn honored Mu chapter with a visit to her home at Missouri, where she began her Delta Gamma career. Through each of these experiences, Kathryn carried the memories of her beloved Mu chapter. "I know many of us (alumnae) have enlarged our understanding of the scope of Delta Gamma and appreciate the ways it has enriched our lives. We didn't forget our chapters and they didn't forget us," she said. "We need to give our new members a wonderful home for their first Delta Gamma experiences, a home like the one that is in the background of all our memories—904 Providence Road, Columbia, Missouri." Following her presidential term, Kathryn and her husband, Gordon, moved to northern California to live near their son, Richard, daughter, Susan, and their families. Susan is an alumna of Gamma chapter at the University of California, Berkeley. Richard's daughter, Katy Gary Drewry, is a Sigma chapter Delta Gamma from Northwestern University. Kathryn has five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She can be reached at kbgary@sbcglobal.net.
