The tour showed us Photo courtesy of Bill Bakerville Elsie Bakerville celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends in Red Bluff, Dec. 3. A 100th birthday celebration for Elsie Bakerville was Saturday, Dec. 3, hosted by her daughter Gail Westfall and her son Bill Bakerville. Elsie Bakerville was born Dec. 5, 1911 in the Evergreen District, Cottonwood, Shasta County to Arthur and Frieda Kyler, the second eldest of 10 children, and the oldest of four surviving sisters. Among the guests attending the celebration were her youngest sister, Bette Rae Pereira, and two of Bette's daughters, Debbie and Michelle, all from Gerber. Her sisters Anita Sheets of Yuba City and Esther Parker of Marysville were unable to attend. Other guests joining in the celebration were her grand- children, Lisa Hume of Elk Grove; Cheryl Foley of Red Bluff; Michelle Shaw of Redding; Steven Bakerville of Redding; her great grandchildren Tanner and Carson Shaw, and Danielle Foley. Also present were Rodney Smith of Jamestown, Cody Berry, Native Daughters and friends, Ida Knowles, Mildred Pierce and Ethyl Clay, all from Red Bluff. We learned about how the olives are picked from the trees with a giant truck, how the olives are cleaned, how Lucero gets mandarins and how it all comes together to make the olive oil. We watched how the mandarin flavored olive oil is made. First, olives and mandarins are chopped by a machine then pushed through the Malaxer. The Malaxer stirs the olive and man- darin pulp and was "heat- ed at 75 degrees and no more". Next, the mixture is put into a centrifuge that "separated water, solids, and oil." The final stage was the polisher that spun the oil super fast to clean it again. After this, the oil is ready to go into bottles. There was also ice cream mixed with fla- vored olive oil to give it flavor. I tried mandarin and chocolate. My favorite was the chocolate olive oil ice cream. Finally we tried some samples of mustards, olives, balsamic vinegar, crackers and olive spreads in the store and looked at all of the things that Lucero Olive Oil makes. Our 4-H club had a lot of fun learning how olive oil is made and trying all of the samples. It is nice to have a local company show us how they make stuff. A Bull Calf Of Many Tales Born To Local Sciots "The Bull Calf" was born in Red Bluff this morn- ing. Many bull calves have been born in Tehama county since the advent of civilization and cows but none like this one. It is unlike any bull calf ever born heretofore. COMMUNITY CLIPS Post Office open Sunday The Red Bluff Post Office has been authorized to have extended hours for the convenience of those send- ing holiday cards and packages. The post office, 447 Walnut St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sun- day, Dec. 18. Extended hours have also been authorized for the Redding Main office at 2323 Churn Creek Road. Health Partnership to meet The Tehama County Health Partnership will meet from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at the Tehama County Department of Education, 1135 Lincoln St., in Red Bluff. Members will collect donations of toys, food and wrap- ping paper for families in need. They will listen to Karissa Morehouse provide information about the College OPTIONS Program. They will also learn about the TCHSA - Mental Health Innovative Drumming Project along with continuing to work on their 2011/2012 sub- committee workplans. Partnership is a collabora- tive effort among various organizations and individuals to improve the health and well being of Tehama County resi- dents.
