SPRING 2015 Inside Colorado Alpha Sets High Standards SigEp Takes the Lead Welcome, New Members ΣΦΕ LATIRO F N C O L O R A D O A L P H A s U N I V E R S I T Y O F C O L O R A D O S I G M A P H I E P S I L O N THE Get Involved with Your AVC SigEp Can Only Get Stronger with Alumni Support S now has blanketed the Flatirons, but we all know that warmer months are right around the corner! Our Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) will use the upcoming summer break to once again focus on the successful year ahead for Colorado Alpha. Working from the Outside In Now that the exterior of our Chapter House looks great, it is time to focus on the interior. We are exploring an overhaul of the study room. For those of us from older generations, the study room is the east main-floor room off of the president's room. It continues to provide a good environment for studying, as well as hosting our AVC meetings. A remodel will provide better lighting, seating, and tables. Crisis Averted We had sub-zero temperatures during winter break, which unfortunately caused a pipe to burst in the ceiling above the kitchen. We were fortunate, however, as one brother was in the house and heard water running. Thanks to his quick call to our property manager, Cory Robinson, we were able to shut the water off within minutes and kept damage to a minimum. Our AVC and our chef stepped in and cleaned up. AVC Keeps House Full The AVC worked hard to change the Chapter's bylaws ensuring the house remains at full capacity from one semester to the next. Financing special projects and general house maintenance demand that we keep the house full and a desirable alternative to off-campus living arrangements. With the current amenities and our proximity to campus, the AVC feels confident our Chapter will remain a strong presence in the future. Volunteers Needed We are losing some of our best alumni volunteers, young and old, as they pursue other opportunities. AVC President Gert VanMoorsel '82 rode off into the sunset after serving so many years on the board. We wish Gert well, as he will be right over the divide in Aspen with his wife, Mindi. John Delva '11 has taken over the duties of president while juggling a very busy schedule in law. AVC Treasurer Kyle DeLapp '10 moved out of state to attend graduate school. The current AVC board has new members that will surely be filling vital roles. As with any organization, we continually look for new members. Please consider giving time back to your fraternity! If you are interested in serving on the AVC, please contact John Delva at johndelva@gmail.com. Save the Date Homecoming is Saturday, October 17, 2015. The new upgrades at Folsom Field—called the Sustainable Excellence Initiative—are really taking shape. The AVC invites you to our annual alumni barbecue in our new yard before the game. We hope to see you there! VDBL, Allen Robie '82 Colorado Alpha Housing Committee Chairman robiewan@msn.com Colorado Alpha members at the annual alumni meeting at Homecoming last fall. Chris Bittman '85 presents Gert VanMoorsel '82 with an award for his service as AVC president. A llen Robie '82 joined Sigma Phi Epsilon in 1979. Even as a freshman, he was already very busy juggling academics (engineering) and athletics (gymnastics), but he felt a strong sense of camaraderie with the men of Colorado Alpha. He took the responsibility of being a SigEp very seriously and reveled in the fact that he was part of a diverse, widely talented, and well-respected group of men. Allen graduated from CU with a degree in architectural engineering and landed a job at an engineering firm right out of college. Since then, he's owned his own company as a property inspector for 28 years. He walks on roofs, crawls in crawlspaces, and advises new buyers on home purchases ("Skip Willenbrock '81 was my first client"). During his career, Allen has inspected over 11,000 homes. "SigEp helped me focus on the aspects of life after college. I had a better sense of organization and going the extra mile once I graduated. Gymnastics was also a huge influence on who I am today. Virtue, diligence, and brotherly love: all tenants of both the SigEp fraternity and the gymnastics 'fraternity.'" Allen Robie '82 Dedicates Time and Energy into SigEp's Future (Continued on page 4)
