St.Peter'sEpiscopal Church St. Peter's Episcopal Church offers worship ser- vices during Holy Week beginning with the Palm Sunday service on Sunday, March 29, and concluding with a traditional Easter Service on Sunday, April 5. The Rev. Diana Lueck- ert will preside and preach for Palm Sunday on March 29 at the 9:30 a.m. worship service. Palm Sunday marks the last Sunday in Lent and the day on which Holy Week begins. This day commem- orates Jesus' triumphant procession into Jerusalem and is marked by a bless- ing of palms. This year The Passion from the Gospel of Mark will be read. The Pas- sion refers to Jesus' suffer- ing leading up to his cru- cifixion. The Rev. Maryly Adair, Rector, will preside and preach at all other services during Holy Week. A Sta- tions of the Cross devotional service at 10 a.m. will occur on Wednesday, April 1. This service is a liturgical way to reenact the events that en- compassed Jesus' journey as he carried his cross from the Hall of Pilate, where he was condemned to death, to the site of his execution on Golgotha — Calvary. This service recalls that jour- ney as a meditation of wor- ship and an act of devotion to God. Worshippers are making their own journey and in the process confess- ing their own dependence upon God. Two services will be of- fered on Thursday, April 2. A Morning Prayer and Sta- tions of the Cross service will begin at 9 a.m. Morn- ing Prayer, also known as matins, consists of open- ing sentences, an optional Confession and Absolution, recitation of the Psalms, readings from Scripture, the Apostles' Creed, and prayers. This service will also incorporate the Sta- tions of the Cross liturgy. The second service on Thursday, April 2, will be a Maundy Thursday Ser- vice at 7 p.m. and features a foot washing and strip- ping of the altar. Maundy Thursday or "Holy Thurs- day" is the day Christians commemorate the Last Sup- per when Jesus shared the Passover meal with his dis- ciples on the night before he was crucified. In contrast to joyful Easter celebrations when Christians worship their resurrected Savior, Maundy Thursday services are typically more solemn occasions, marked by the shadow of Jesus' betrayal. The two important bibli- cal events which are the primary focus of Maundy Thursday services are Je- sus washing the feet of his disciples and Jesus institut- ing the practice of commu- nion. The word Maundy is a shortened form either of the word commandment in its early spelling com- maundement or of the Latin words mandatum novum, which means new com- mandment. The church al- tars are stripped at the end of the Holy Eucharist, also known as Holy Commu- nion, on Maundy Thursday and any immovable crosses are shrouded. The celebration of the Great Easter Vigil will take place on Saturday, April 4, beginning at 7 p.m. Chris- tian feast days generally begin at sunset on the pre- vious day making this the first service of Easter. For this reason, the duration of the Easter Triduum, three days, is from the evening of Maundy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday. The Easter Vigil features a new light kindled in the Paschal Candle represent- ing the light of Christ, the readings of the story of sal- vation from the Old and New testaments, a baptism and the serving of Holy Eu- charist. Holy Week will conclude with Holy Eucharist and the Flowering of the Cross on Easter at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, April 5, celebrating the res- urrection of Jesus Christ. Christians believe, accord- ing to Scripture, that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross. Through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus purchasing for all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus. Easter is the oldest and greatest feast in the church year and the central day on the church calendar. Easter Day is the culmination of Holy Week, with its special services re- calling the last week of Je- sus' earthly ministry. The tradition of flowering the cross is found in Christian art as early as the sixth cen- tury. On Easter morning, flowers are used to decorate a wooden cross in honor of the risen Lord. The cross is often set up outside the church following the Easter service as a witness to those who pass by. All are welcome to attend Holy Week services.
