StaffReports FOLSOM Jaxon Balken and Jayne Brandt finished seventh in their age groups March 22 at the 2015 14-and-Under Sierra Nevada Junior Olympic Short Course Championships. Balken and Brandt, both 12-year-olds, swam for Sun Oaks Aquatics Racing, which placed eighth out of 22 teams compet- ing from Northern California and Nevada. Around 660 swimmers com- peted in the event that featured trials and finals over three days. Balken and Brandt combined to break seven Sun Oak Aquat- ics Racing records. Balken crushed records in the 50-yard backstroke, 100 back- stroke, 200 backstroke, 100 in- dividual medley and 200 individ- ual medley. All of his swims were AAA times. Brandt broke team records in the 50 breaststroke, 100 breast- stroke, 200 breaststroke and 100 individual medley. All but Brandt's 100 IM were AAA times. Brandt's 8-year-old little sister Jordan came 0.11 seconds away from breaking the 25 butterfly team record, swimming a swift 16.95 seconds, which is a AAAA time. Balken brought home a gold medal in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:14.52, and sil- ver medals in the 50 backstroke (28.76) and 100 backstroke (1:02.93). Gonzaga's big man got to star in the show in prime time on Fri- day night, scoring 18 points with nine rebounds to lead the sec- ond-seeded Bulldogs to a 74-62 win over No. 11 seed UCLA in the Houston Regional semifinals. The victory puts Gonzaga (35- 2) in the Elite Eight for the sec- ond time, its first regional final since 1999. The Bulldogs will play Duke on Sunday. UCLA (22-14) opened the sec- ond half with a 6-0 run to get within 35-34. Gonzaga got go- ing after that, scoring the next 12 points, thanks to the power- ful inside game of the 7-foot-1, 288-pound Karnowski to make it 47-34.
