PHI DELTA THETA FRATERNITY 3 Paying It Forward T he four years we experience in college can be some of the most fun and life-changing years of our lives. For Pete Arentson 1740, a huge part of those years was his time as a member of Phi Delta Theta. Fraternity was not a family tradition for Pete. In fact, no one in his immediate family had even considered it before. But Pete felt it offered him a unique college experience, and that is exactly what it gave him. Being a Phi Delt provided him the chance to build a network, develop a good work ethic and reinforced the importance of philanthropy. One of his favorite memories from his undergraduate years is being a part of the Dance Marathon each year and raising money for the Children's Miracle Network. He sees the experiences he had and lessons he learned through Phi Delta Theta carrying through to life after college. It is because of these experiences that Pete felt compelled to give to the capital campaign and why he urges others to consider giving to the campaign as well. "Phi Delta Theta gave me an avenue to build incredible relationships in school and gave me experiences that I wouldn't have otherwise seen. It's important to pay it forward and give future Phis the chance to have those experiences as well." Pete sees the campaign helping Phi Delta Theta remain competitive with the other houses on campus. He also believes it will help enhance the experience of those currently in the chapter and future members. "If you're an active member of the chapter and still on campus, consider what you want your legacy to be. Determine who you want to be, what you believe, and where you want to go. Mentor and give back to those who are coming behind you and leave our fraternity in a better place than you found it." Pete and his wife, Amy, have two daughters, Elaine and Eliza. They are expecting their third child soon. Pete spends his time volunteering with his church and enjoys playing golf, basketball, and softball. George R. Colthurst 521 John C. Arentson 1740 Eric T. Snyder 1760 leaving Phi delta theta Better than they Found it To Do What Ought to Be Done S ome people are destined for certain things. Sometimes that is to follow a specific career path or meet the love of their life. For Steve Good 1645, it seems he was destined to be a part of Phi Delta Theta. When he first met the men at Iowa Gamma, he saw them as an outstanding group who would help him navigate his collegiate career. Through Phi Delt, he was exposed to many leaders, personalities and characteristics. He was able to take that diversity and learn from it, allowing it to mold him into the man he is today. Along the way, he has had mentors to guide him, and the experience continues to forge great friendships that will last a lifetime. That is why when he was asked to give to the capital campaign, it was a no brainer. Phi Delt was the first organization to really instill in him the idea of making sure to leave the organization in better shape than he found it. He wants to give the current and future members the same opportunities he had. As an alumnus who works closely with the chapter, Steve gets to see first-hand how the chapter is being affected by the capital campaign. "The chapter is on fire right now and much of this can be attributed to the undergraduates seeing that this is a project that matters to Phis across the board; that there is a multi-generational level of care about the future of Iowa Gamma." When asked about giving and what he would say to those who want to contribute but haven't yet, Steve placed emphasis on how it's not about the size of your gift; instead it's about showing support for Phi Delt. Everyone can help, whether that is through donations to the capital campaign or through mentoring an undergraduate. The key is to be involved in the future of the chapter and give back. "To do what ought to be done." Steve is in his tenth year on the Phi Delta Theta Headquarters staff, overseeing membership engagement and the Fraternity's charitable athletics program, Iron Phi. He lives in Ames with his wife, Tillie, and their two children, Calvin and Tess. Join Pete and Steve in donating today!
