Wehavehadsomebeau- tiful days this month, and I have looked longingly out my window dreaming of paddleboarding or hik- ing or even going for a nice jog as I am chained to my computer working on dif- ferent things for the non- profit. I knew going in that this would be no walk in the park. Nothing worthwhile ever is, it seems. I chose this path over getting my mas- ter's degree as I felt it would lead me more toward my dreams. I honestly believe it will. The downside is the disruption to my sleep. I hit the pillow thinking of the tasks I need to complete, and I cannot shut my brain off. It's getting a little bet- ter, but I never understood the power of a good night's sleep until now. Curse you, insomnia. In Team Intense news, Rocky Golden continues to train like a brute for his fight at Win River next month. He's been running, getting a lot of jujitsu train- ing in at Amazonas Brazil- ian Jiu Jitsu in Redding, and getting his rounds of sparring in. I don't know anyone who works out harder. He is simply phe- nomenal, and I hope to be in his corner watching him complete a first round KO. As always, he could really use a sponsor or two. This amateur mma stuff can be very expensive. Hit me up if you want to be on his shorts or shirt. His teammate, for- merly from Red Bluff (sadly he just moved to Redding), Jesse Davis is also train- ing like crazy and looking to fight to defend his title. Get some, Jesse and Rocky. In female fighter news, on March 7, our own little dynamo, Shyla Silva went to Alameda to complete in the 16th annual "Jiujitsu by the Bay tournament." This was her first ever grappling com- petition, and she competed in the women's beginner No Gi division with only one month of official training. She took second place in that division. Then she took third place in the women's open division. All the while avoiding getting submitted in her matches. Shyla has been training with me and Team Intense for around 5 months. She has proven to be powerful, quick, flexi- ble, tireless and a very fast learner. She receives her official jiujitsu training through her brother Glenn Lego, owner of LongShot Martial Arts in Burney. We are all extremely proud of her and see huge things in her future. Shyla had this to say, "The tournament was an amazing experience. I learned a lot that will help in preparation for many more to come. I enjoyed rep- resenting the Psycho name." To close on a syrupy, sweet note, March 18th will mark 20 years with the love of my life, John Vilche. When we first met, I was at a point in my life where I could no longer tolerate the singles scene. I found him at Gator's Bar, which closed down a few years later. Who says you can't find true love in a bar? I figured he would make a fine husband. So, 4 months after we met, we married. It's not all been smooth sailing. How could it be? He's had to deal with all my dieting and fighting and Eskimo Olympics, this nonprofit dream and all kinds of stuff. What I cher- ish about him the most is that he is willing to support me in whatever cockama- mie dreams I have with no question. He is more hand- some today than when we first met, and I am blessed to have found my soul-mate. Happy 20th, muffin. A cap- ital asset includes most property you own for per- sonal use or own as an in- vestment. Here are 10 facts that you should know about capital gains and losses: 1. Capital Assets. Cap- ital assets include prop- erty such as your home or car, as well as investment property, such as stocks and bonds. 2. Gains and Losses. A capital gain or loss is the difference between your basis and the amount you get when you sell an asset. Your basis is usually what you paid for the asset. 3. Net Investment In- come Tax. You must in- clude all capital gains in your income and you may be subject to the Net In- vestment Income Tax. This tax applies to certain net investment income of individuals, estates and trusts that have income above statutory threshold amounts. The rate of this tax is 3.8 percent. For de- tails visit IRS.gov. 4. Deductible Losses. You can deduct capital losses on the sale of invest- ment property. You cannot deduct losses on the sale of property that you hold for personal use. 5. Long and Short Term. Capital gains and losses are either long-term or short-term, depending on how long you held the property. If you held the property for more than one year, your gain or loss is long-term. If you held it one year or less, the gain or loss is short-term. 6. Net Capital Gain. If your long-term gains are more than your long-term losses, the difference be- tween the two is a net long-term capital gain. If your net long-term capital gain is more than your net short-term capital loss, you have a net capital gain. 7. Tax Rate. The capi- tal gains tax rate usually depends on your income. The maximum net capital gain tax rate is 20 percent. However, for most taxpay- ers a zero or 15 percent rate will apply. A 25 or 28 per- cent tax rate can also apply to certain types of net cap- ital gains. 8. Limit on Losses. If your capital losses are more than your capital gains, you can deduct the difference as a loss on your tax return. This loss is lim- ited to $3,000 per year, or $1,500 if you are married and file a separate return. 9. Carryover Losses. If your total net capital loss is more than the limit you can deduct, you can carry over the losses you are not able to deduct to next year's tax return. You will treat those losses as if they happened in that next year. 10. Forms to File. You of- ten will need to file Form 8949, Sales and Other Dis- positions of Capital Assets, with your federal tax re- turn to report your gains and losses. You also need to file Schedule D, Capi- tal Gains and Losses with your tax return. For more information about this topic, see the Schedule D instructions and Publication 550, In- vestment Income and Ex- penses. You can visit IRS. gov to view, download or print any tax product you need right away.
