Quinn Cook scored 22 points to help No. 1 seed Duke get off to a torrid start and beat Robert Morris 85-56. Freshman Jahlil Oka- for added 21 as the Blue Devils (30-4) wasted little time getting their offense revving, hitting their first seven shots and 12 of 15 to quickly build a big lead. That's not to say every- thing went smoothly for Duke, a team with half of its eight scholarship play- ers making its tournament debut. Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski furi- ously burned a timeout af- ter Okafor blew a reverse dunk, while Robert Morris — the No. 16 seed that had to win a First Four game to get here — showed plenty of fight. Rodney Pryor scored 23 points on 10-for-19 shoot- ing for Robert Morris (20- 15). IOWA 83, DAVIDSON 52 Aaron White scored 13 straight points as part of Iowa's 18-3 run early in the second half, and the seventh-seeded Hawkeyes rolled into the round of 32. MICHIGANST.70,GEORGIA63 Denzel Valentine scored 16 points and went 6 for 6 at the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds, help- ing Michigan State hold on for the win. VIRGINIA 79, BELMONT 67 Malcolm Brogdon scored 22 points and Justin An- derson re-emerged as a scoring threat for second- seeded Virginia. NORTHERN IOWA 71, WYO- MING 54 Paul Jesperson led five Northern Iowa players in double figures with 16 points, and Sean Tuttle scored 14 for the fifth-seeded Panthers. LOUISVILLE 57, CAL-IRVINE 55 Freshman Quentin Snider hit the winning free throws and Terry Rozier made the saving steal for fourth-seeded Louisville. OKLAHOMA 69, ALBANY 60 TaShawn Thomas had 18 points and Buddy Hield scored 15, carrying Okla- homa into the round of 32 after early exits the last two years. WESTVIRGINIA68,BUFFALO 62 Tarik Phillip hit a big 3-pointer for fifth-seeded West Virginia with 28 sec- onds left while the shot clock was winding down. MARYLAND 65, VALPARA- ISO 62 Dez Wells turned an offensive rebound into a three-point play with 1:44 left, and Varun Ram stripped away Valparaiso's last chance as Maryland held off the determined Crusaders. OREGON 79, OKLAHOMA STATE 73 Joseph Young scored 27 points and Elgin Cook added 18, leading No. 8 seed Oregon to the win. KANSAS 75, NEW MEXICO ST. 56 Frank Mason III scored 17 points to lead a balanced attack, and the second-seeded Jayhawks gave the Big 12 its first win of the tournament after three losses on Thursday. WICHITA STATE 81, INDI- ANA 76 Fred VanVleet matched his career high with 27 points and Ron Baker made big free throws late for seventh-seeded Wichita State. WISCONSIN 86, COASTAL CAROLINA 72 Big Ten player of the year Frank Kaminsky had 27 points and 12 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season, and No. 1 seed Wis- consin defeated Coastal Carolina. SAN DIEGO STATE 76, ST. JOHN'S 64 JJ O'Brien scored 18 points, Dwayne Polee II added 15 points on five 3-pointers and San Diego State defeated St. John's. NCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT Favorites have better Day 2, with few upsets made Top seeds Duke, Wisconsin move into round of 32 the winning points. For a kid who grew up in Louis- ville and participated in Pi- tino's youth camps as a kid, it was one memorable per- formance. "I just got up to the line and just shot it," Snider said. "I knew my team needed these points, so I just knocked them down." Wayne Blackshear led the Cardinals with 19 points. Ndiaye finished with 12 points and five rebounds for the Anteaters, and he generated most of the buzz. Every time the soph- omore, out of Senegal, touched the ball, a roar went through the crowd. And Ndiaye was a force through much of the sec- ond half. Twice, he gath- ered the ball in the post, palmed it like a tennis ball and slammed it through the hoop without leaving his feet. On the other end, he blocked one shot, altered about a dozen more and forced Louisville, a team without much outside shooting, to take its chances from the perimeter. But with the game on the line in the last two minutes, he didn't touch the ball. And when the Big Fella got his fourth foul with 2:26 left, it cost UC Irvine dearly. Trailing 55-53, Blacks- hear took the ball straight at Ndiaye, who didn't con- test it much, and hit a short shot over him to tie it with 42 seconds left. "Tricky," Blackshear called it. "Because I was getting a couple midrange jumpers, and I noticed af- ter I shot that I could have gotten to the rim. And then I did it at the end." On the next possession, Nelson, who came to UC Ir- vine from Britain, dribbled the clock down, but instead of looking inside, he jacked up a shot from a few feet behind the 3-point line that rimmed out. There was a scramble in the corner. Snider grabbed the ball, and in the scrum, Davis fell into him to set up the freshman for the win- ning points. Lots of inci- dental contact, but should it have been a foul? Anteat- ers coach Russell Turner bit his tongue. "To have it come down to a foul call and a non-foul call, that's a tough one," he said. Meanwhile, the Car- dinals had two fouls to burn after Snider's free throws, and after using one of them, Rozier could be reckless, so he dove at Young with the clock tick- ing down and made the steal to seal the win. Louisville FROM PAGE 1 tle nerve-wracking until standing at first base after the single, but he was able to breathe more easily once Kershaw got up and kept pitching. As for Gray, like Ker- shaw scheduled to start the opener for his team, he said it was a relief that Kershaw was able to continue. For his part, Gray gave up two runs, but pitched into the sixth inning and said he's on track for the opener. "I've got two or three more starts," he said. "I'm getting close to where I want to be." • There were scouts from at least a half dozen clubs, including the Red Sox, Yan- kees, Twins, Rockies, and Nationals, at the Dodgers- A's game. While it's diffi- cult to say how many are zeroed in on Barry Zito, it's clear that he's becom- ing an ever-more-attractive commodity. Those are all teams that need pitching, and they know that the A's, with a surplus of young pitching and almost certainly no room in the rotation for Zito, will likely be making him available. Zito threw the last three innings Friday, stretch- ing his streak to seven in- nings without allowing a run. While there have been suggestions that he could be a reliever, Zito said he couldn't comment on that. "I'm in a starter's posi- tion here, getting innings like a starter," he said in of- fering a "no comment" to the questions of his going to the bullpen. Zito, who like Kershaw threw extra in the bull- pen after he was done on the field, got the win when catcher Luke Carlin singled home a tie-breaking run in the ninth. "Barry gets better every time out," Carlin said. "His pitches are good, and on top of everything else, he's starting to get that little rise in his fastball that Da- vid Aardsma used to have."
