The most spectacular viewing came on Norway's Svalbard islands near the North Pole, where a bright clear day and blindingly white snow highlighted the cosmic wonder that used to bring ancient civilizations to a trembling halt. Visitors to the Arctic is- lands were treated to a full view of the sun's corona — a faint ring of rays sur- rounding the moon — that is only visible during a to- tal eclipse. "All of the various things that you're supposed to see — the shadow bands, the co- rona, both diamond rings, prominences — it had ev- erything. It had absolutely everything," said Richard Patching, a 63-year-old vis- itor from Calgary in Can- ada. Elsewhere, the much-an- ticipated solar eclipse was a bit of a letdown. In the Faeroe Islands — the only place besides Svalbard where the eclipse was to- tal — a blanket of clouds meant thousands of vis- itors missed out on the event, apart from the eerie darkness from the moon's shadow. "Well it was very close," said Fred Espenak, a re- tired NASA scientist vis- iting the island group in the North Atlantic. "If the eclipse had been 25 min- utes later, it would have been fantastic. EUROPE Ring of light: Total eclipse over Svalbard islands in the Arctic 1925 Tennessee Gov. Austin Peay (pee) signed the Butler Act, which prohib- ited the teaching of the Theory of Evolution in public schools. (Tennes- see repealed the law in 1967.) 1935 Persia officially changed its name to Iran. 1945 During World War II, Allied bombers began four days of raids over Germany. 1952 The Moondog Coronation Ball, considered the first rock and roll concert, took place at Cleveland Arena. 1963 The Alcatraz federal pris- on island in San Francisco Bay was emptied of its last inmates and closed at the order of Attorney Gen- eral Robert F. Kennedy. 1965 Civil rights demonstra- tors led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. began their third, successful march from Selma to Mont- gomery, Alabama. NASA launched Ranger 9, the last of the Ranger series of spacecra sent to explore the moon. 1990 Namibia became an independent nation as the former colony marked the end of 75years of South African rule. Well — they don't exactly storm things anymore. Nevertheless, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will appear to promote the March 31release of their new album "Live: Tokyo Dome In Concert." It's kind of a big deal for fans starved for news the past few years, as it confirms they're haven't strangled David Lee Roth yet and millions of middle-aged people can still say they listen to rock and roll. The announcement also may have let slip that the band is about to tour again, which hasn't been announced officially yet. — Tony Hicks, Bay Area News Group Star report Thiscouldbeyourluckyday by helping a dog or cat find a loving home from...
