Friday, November 18, 2011 – Daily News 5A WORLD BRIEFING Wall Street protesters tie up traffic NEW YORK (AP) — Occupy Wall Street pro- testers clogged streets and tied up traffic around the U.S. on Thursday to mark two months since the movement's birth and sig- nal they aren't ready to quit, despite the breakup of many of their encamp- ments by police. More than 200 people were arrested, most of them in New York. The marches were for the most part peaceful, with only scattered clash- es between police and demonstrators. Most of the arrests were for block- ing streets, the traffic dis- ruptions were brief, and the turnout, at least in New York, fell well short of what police had been expecting. Chanting ''All day, all week, shut down Wall Street,'' more than 1,000 demonstrators gathered near the New York Stock Exchange and sat down in several intersections. Hel- meted police broke up some of the gatherings, and operations at the stock market were not disrupt- ed. The street demonstra- tion came two days after police cleared 200 people from New York's Zuccotti Park, shutting down the encampment that served as headquarters of the Occupy movement. ''This is a critical GOP plan would limit tax breaks for mortgage interest WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of taxpayers who take advantage of deductions for mortgage interest, charitable dona- tions and state and local taxes would be targeted for potential tax hikes under a GOP plan to raise taxes by $290 billion over the next decade to help reduce the nation's deficit. Some workers could also see their employer- provided health benefits taxed for the first time, though aides cautioned that the proposal is still fluid. The plan by Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., who serves on the 12-member debt supercommittee, would Alan Wylie Local Inspector moment for the movement given what happened the other night,'' said Paul Knick, a software engi- neer from Montclair, N.J., as he marched through the financial district. ''It seems like there's a con- certed effort to stop the movement, and I'm here to make sure that doesn't happen.'' Dr. Andrew PomazalD.O. Suspect charged with attempted assassination BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho man accused of firing an assault rifle at the White House believed he was Jesus and thought President Barack Obama was the anti-Christ, according to court documents and those who knew him. At one point, he even sug- gested to an acquain- tance the president was planning to implant com- puter tracking chips into children. Oscar Ramiro Ortega- Hernandez, 21, was charged Thursday with attempting to assassinate the president or his staff. He is accused of firing nine rounds at the White House last Friday night — one of them cracking a window of the first fami- ly's living quarters — when Obama and the first lady were away. If con- victed, Ortega faces up to life in prison. Ortega was arrested Wednesday at a western Pennsylvania hotel when a desk clerk there recog- nized him and called police.
