2A Daily News – Friday, November 18, 2011 Community people&events Birds of feather flys away Boy Scout completes disc golf course Photo Courtesy of Tehama County Museum Pam Britting The Tehama County Museum's exhibit, "Birds of a Feather," will be closing Sunday, Nov. 20. Special to the DN By PAM BRITTING Tehama County Museum Executive Director Tehama County Museum's rotating exhibit, "birds of a feather," is flying away. The last day to view this show is Sunday, Nov. 20. The exhibit features the work of artist Nelda Babb of Dales Station. It consists of over 100 pieces that com- bine the techniques of drawing, painting and the use of real bird feathers to create true-to-life portraits. Babb, who didn't develop her art/craft until she was in her mid-sixty's, spent about 2.5 years inventing and testing a specialized glue formula. Since feathers were removed from the bodies of frozen birds, State and Fed- eral regulations almost halted her ability to create these works. The California Fish and Game Department however, granted Nelda unusual permission to continue when she promised never to reveal her glue formula or to teach anyone else her methods. It is an art style that might never be repeated. The final chance for viewing the exhibit is 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 and Sunday, Nov. 20. The Tehama County Museum, 275 C Street, in the town of Tehama just off Hwy. 99 and over the bridge from Los Molinos. It will be open from 1-4p.m. on both days. During the winter, group tours of the permanent exhibits depicting Tehama County's history will still be be available by scheduled appointment. To schedule a visit call 384-2595 or send an e-mail to tcmuse@tehama.net. Special to the DN Despite being injured Red Bluff High Senior and Troop 154 Eagle Scout candidate Garrett Spangler completed the installation of his six-hole disc golf course at Bend School over the Nov. 12-13 weekend. The project has been in the works since last spring when Spangler and Bend School Lead Teacher Albert Estrada came up with the plan, which was originally to raise sufficient funds to purchase the disc golf tar- gets.An unexpected donation of stainless steel rod made it possible and much more cost-effective to design and construct the targets. Spangler spent several weekends working with his father in his grandfather's shop designing and fabricat- ing six baskets and chain hangers. A serious injury to his leg during the last football game of the year forced Spangler to postpone installing the targets by a week. A donation of the hole drilling from Northern Ser- vices and hard work from a group of loyal scout friends made the installation possible in one weekend to keep Spangler's project on schedule. As a result of generous donations of money and ser- vices from friends, family, and community groups and a discount on chain and concrete provided by Home Depot Spangler will have enough money left in his budget to donate a collection of golf discs to the school. The course was tested and approved by the boy scouts working on the project on Sunday afternoon after the final target was installed.
