6B Daily News – Friday, November 18, 2011 FEATURES Seductive smooch stirs spouse's suspicion Dear Annie: When is a kiss just a kiss? The husband of my wife's best friend gave her a wee bit of a special kiss on the lips after another summer of overlapping vacation time at a summer cottage. I could be way off the mark, but it seemed like more than a brief goodbye kiss. I emailed him about it, and he replied that there has never been anything between them. They are just good friends. Regardless, my gut says the damage has been done. This guy is on his second mar- riage. The night before "the kiss,'' the four of us had a wide- ranging discussion. I am fairly traditional in my views and val- ues. His ending comment was about how in retirement he'd like to donate sperm. He knows I had a vasectomy years ago. Call me insecure, but I sensed something more on his mind. Annie's tolerable, but a full-blown smack on the lips is inappropriate. A discussion about becoming a sperm donor may be in poor taste, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything else. Regardless of his behav- ior, it is your wife's that matters. Talk to her about your concerns. You don't need to cut the hus- band off completely, but it's OK to limit contact if he makes you uncomfortable. However, if your wife still wants to vacation with her friend and her husband, you should come along and stay the entire time. Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: In April of 1975, I reluctantly gave my only child, a son, up for adoption. I was 20 years old and not in a position to raise him properly. I have deeply regretted that decision ever since and have been trying to find my son since he turned 21. I contacted the attorney who handled In previous years, I have left these vacations early while my wife stayed on. Now I feel taken advantage of. I want my wife to keep her close friendship with his wife, but I want both of us to disassociate from her husband. Am I wrong? — No-Win Situation in Wiscon- sin Dear No Win: You are jumping to conclusions because you don't trust this man. But do you trust your wife? A light peck on the lips between good friends is the private adoption and received a return letter stating that he forwarded my request to the adoptive parents, but they preferred the matter to remain closed. Unfortunately, the attorney has since passed away, and I have no idea how to pursue this any further. If my son is still alive, he would be 36 years old. I believe he has the right to know his birth family medical history at the very least. I realize there are some adopted chil- dren who have no desire to meet their Mediterranean diet is model of healthful eating DEAR DOCTOR K: I keep hearing about the health bene- fits of a Mediterranean diet. But what IS a Mediterranean diet? DEAR READER: The "Mediterranean diet" refers to the tra- ditional diet of Greece, Italy and other countries near the Mediterranean Sea. There is a good deal of scientif- ic evidence that the diet has health benefits. Dr. K by Anthony L. Komaroff, M.D. Restrict yourself to a small handful a day. Some grocery stores sell small bags of mixed nuts and dried fruits. The total calories in one bag are about 150 to 200. I keep a bunch in my desk and have one bag a day, typically at a time (like mid-afternoon) when I'm feeling a little sleepy and hungry. The Mediterranean diet con- sists mostly of plant foods. These include fruits, vegeta- bles, grains, beans, nuts and seeds. Animal protein is con- sumed chiefly in the forms of fish and poultry. Olive oil is the principal fat. And wine is taken with meals. What are the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet? For people who follow the diet reg- ularly, there are many of them. The diet is associated with lower body weight. There is a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. People who regularly follow the Mediterranean diet have lower risks of dying of heart disease, stroke or cancer, and have a longer lifespan. Sound good? There is no pill ever invented that can give you all those health benefits. We have a lot more informa- tion in our Special Health Report called "Healthy Eating: A Guide to the New Nutrition." You can find out more about it at my website. In the meantime, here are some tips to help you get start- ed on eating the Mediterranean way: (1) Pile on the fruits and vegetables, and eat many differ- ent — and different-colored — varieties. (2) Go a little nuts. Nuts are nutritious, but calorie-dense. (3) Go for the whole grains. There are good carbohydrates ("carbs") and bad carbs. Choose whole grains (good carbs) over refined grains. Whole-grain breads, for exam- ple, are healthier than white breads, brown rice is healthier than white rice. And I think whole-grain breads and brown rice also taste better. (I wish I could tell you that I've found a brand of whole-grain pasta that I think tastes better than tradi- tional refined-grain pasta, but I haven't. If you have, let us know.) (4) Eat good fats. For a long time, we've been told that fat in the diet is bad for you. That's just plain wrong. There are good fats and bad fats. You need the good ones, and olive oil and canola oil are rich in good fats. (Butter and lard are full of bad fats.) Omega-3 fatty acids are healthy fats and are found in anchovies, sardines, mackerel and salmon. (5) Slow down. Embrace the traditions of the Mediterranean diet by taking time to enjoy your meal. Eating a large meal over 30 to 40 minutes, instead of 15, allows you to feel full with much smaller portions. And that helps control your weight. The representatives will answer questions pertaining to Medicare's annual enrollment period that began on Oct. 15 and will end Dec. 7. There are thousands of people with Medicare in the area who will be affected by plan availability and premium changes. Anthem Blue Cross' contract offering their Region- al Medicare Advantage plans called Freedom Blue I PPO and Freedom Blue Classic PPO are leaving the five-county region of Butte, Tehama, Glenn, Plumas and Colusa counties, as well as several other marketed areas in California. But I would think he would want his medical history. Must I sit back for another 10 years and hope for the best, or is there something else I can do? — Sad Birth Mom in Omaha, Neb. Dear Sad: You can hire a private detective who specializes in these cases, or you can leave your information on the many available search and adoption reg- istries. The Nebraska Dept. of Health and Human Services may be helpful. Also try the International Soundex Reunion Registry (isrr.org) at 1-888- 886-ISRR. Good luck. Dear Annie: You've printed several responses to "Suffering Soon-To-Be Ex,'' who stupidly joked that he'd have grabbed his sister-in-law, "Zoe,'' if she'd been available. I wonder why men speak first and think later? When I was a newlywed, my husband said, "You're way down on my list of priorities,'' and that proved to be true for 45 years of marriage. I never forgot that statement. Why I stayed with him for 45 years is beyond me. — Men! Annie's Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
