Ontheair Baseball CORNING 6, ENTERPRISE 5 The Cardinals opened the 2015 season Wednesday by holding on to win at Enter- prise 6-5. Corning led 6-0 mid- way through the third in- ning, before the Hornets began climbing back into the game. Austin Fox pitched a complete game for Corn- ing, finishing with nine strikeouts and picking up the win. Michael Wold, Joseph Aguirre and Isaiah Jones had multi-hit games for Corning. Jones drove in two runs. Wold and Aguirre each had doubles and drove in a run. Corning (1-0) was sched- uled to host Orland on Thursday. The Cardinals travel to Gridley on Tuesday. Roundup FROM PAGE 1 lier this week, choosing a new start after being re- leased last Friday when ne- gotiations didn't work out on a restructured deal with Arizona because of salary cap concerns. Dockett said in the ra- dio interview that he would have taken less money to stay with the Cardinals, but the difference between the two offers was far too much. "I knew then that it was my time to go," he said. Dockett was one of Ar- izona's longest-tenured players along with Larry Fitzgerald. He was taken off the field on a cart in August with the right knee injury that required surgery to re- pair a torn anterior cruci- ate ligament. He was hurt during an 11-on-11 drill. With Justin Smith pon- dering retirement — or ap- parently at least still decid- ing whether to return for a 15th season — Dockett could fill a big need with another veteran presence on the defensive line. The 49ers finished 8-8 and out of the playoffs for the first time in four years, dealing with injuries to several key defensive stars. San Fran- cisco had reached the three previous NFC champion- ship games and lost in the Super Bowl following the 2012 season. San Francisco also signed wide receiver Je- rome Simpson to a two- year deal Thursday. Simp- son was released by the Vikings last September following further off-field troubles involving drugs and alcohol that earned him a three-game NFL suspension for violations of the league's substance- abuse policy. The 49ers have employed several players with legal problems in recent seasons, prompting CEO Jed York to say after 2014 ended that the team needed to be bet- ter. San Francisco had 10 arrests involving six dif- ferent players since Janu- ary 2012, most in the NFL. "Our mission is very simple: the San Francisco 49ers win with class. We haven't won, and I don't think we've conducted ourselves with the level of class that I expect of our organization," he said. "We've had off-the-field is- sues. That's going to hap- pen in sports. The level that it's happened here is not acceptable." The 29-year-old Simp- son should add depth in a receiving corps that could lose Michael Crabtree in free agency. A second- round pick by the Bengals in 2008, Simpson played his first four seasons in Cincinnati before joining Minnesota. His 726 yards receiving were a career high in 2013, which came on 48 recep- tions with one touchdown catch. APsportswriterBob Baum in Phoenix contrib- uted to this report. Dockett FROM PAGE 1 By Jay Cohen The Associated Press MESA, ARIZ. Joe Maddon gushed about the ballpark and the fans. He praised starter Travis Wood and said he liked the perfor- mance by his team. Surrounded by his fam- ily under a beautiful blue sky, the new manager of the Chicago Cubs sounded quite pleased with his first game of spring training. "Just a really, really nice, wonderful first day," he said after a 2-2 tie against Barry Zito and the Oakland Athletics. Wood pitched two per- fect innings for a split- squad of Cubs, and Mike Olt hit a two-run homer in the second inning. Maddon opted out of his contract with Tampa Bay over the winter and then agreed to take over the Cubs, who begin the year with big expectations after an active offseason. "I thought we played well," he said. "Oakland pitches well always." Zito pitched two innings in his first spring game for the A's after taking last year off. The left-hander al- lowed two hits, struck out two and walked none. Zito retired his first five batters, including strike- outs of Starlin Castro and Miguel Montero. But he hit Chris Coghlan in the sec- ond and then yielded the long drive to left by Olt. "That changeup, got to tip my hat to that guy. He squared it up pretty good," Zito said. "That's still a pitch right now that the consistency is not there yet, but I saw some good things." Zito hasn't appeared in a regular-season game since Sept. 29, 2013, with San Francisco. He agreed to a minor league deal with Oakland in February and gets a $1 million, one-year contract if he makes the 40-man roster. "It doesn't feel like a year and half," said Zito, who spent his first seven seasons with the A's. "You just kind of go right back to where you were." Wood is trying to win the No. 5 slot in Chicago's rotation after he strug- gled last season. The left- hander made the NL All- Star team in 2013, and then slipped to an 8-13 record and a 5.03 ERA last year. SPRING TRAINING Maddon has debut for Cubs Zito pitches first two innings for A's in 2-2 tie, gives up homer make the club as well. Maxwell, because he's a right-handed hitter with home run potential, could stand to benefit the most from Pence's injury. Bochy already planned to give Maxwell a long look this spring. • Until Pence's injury, it was a positive day in Gi- ants camp. Matt Cain and Tim Hudson both threw live batting practice on a back field, with Hudson saying his ankle felt even further along than it was at the same point last spring. "The ankle, it feels like there's nothing wrong with it at all," said Hudson, who had a cleanup procedure in the offseason. "I've just got to work out the rest of my old ailments." Hudson, who turns 40 in July, threw 25 pitches and was facing hitters for the first time since Game 7 of the World Series. He's slightly behind Cain, who was facing hitters for a sec- ond time. The tentative plan is for Cain to pitch in an exhibi- tion game Tuesday, with Hudson going the follow- ing day. The Giants would like to slot Cain in between Jake Peavy and Hudson, since the two right-handed veterans are more similar in style. Thus, the rotation order to begin the season could be Madison Bumgarner, Peavy, Cain, Hudson and presumably Tim Lincecum. • Hunter Strickland con- tinued to have a hard time putting the gopherball in the past. He made his sec- ond exhibition appearance and yielded his second home run, this time to the Cubs' Billy McKinney. Strickland is working on his offspeed stuff, but both homers he has al- lowed have come on fast- balls. He gave up a postsea- son-record six homers last October. Bochy said he liked Strickland's command, even if he didn't get away with one mistake. "He threw a lot better today," Bochy said. "It's not easy to deal with ad- versity in this game, but I think he's handled it fine. He made one mistake and it went out, which will hap- pen in the Cactus League. • Ryan Vogelsong gave up a grand slam to Cubs marquee prospect Kyle Schwarber during his two- inning spring debut, but his appearance included a play down the line that third baseman Adam Du- vall couldn't make. Vogelsong also was thrown off a bit because umpire Jim Joyce called balls and strikes from just over the pitcher's right shoulder instead of from behind the catcher. Plate umpire Dale Scott took a ball off his hand in the first inning and had to leave the game; play resumed while umpire Mark Ripperger changed into gear to take over. • Duvall also made a throwing error, and his tough day continued when he was thrown out trying to stretch a single.
