The City Council unanimously voted to ex- tend the application deadline to 5 p.m. March 16. Council members on March 17 will then re- consider appointing someone to the seat left va- cant by Orville Knox's resignation in January. The seat's term expires in December 2018. "In the last couple of days I have had response from a few other people that are all of a sudden interested," Councilman Rob Schmid said dur- ing the City Council's regular meeting. He added, "I think I would like to, if possible, extend (the application deadline) to allow for the rest of the people that are interested to apply so we have a more broad field." Dustin Maria, a deputy sheriff at the Tehama County Sheriff's Office, and Mitchell Drury, a stu- dent at Shasta College, were the only applicants the City Council considered for the vacant seat Tuesday. Maria, who was recently appointed to the city's Planning Commission, also is the president of the Tehama County Deputy Sheriffs' Association (DSA), which in January voted to support the Red Bluff Peace Officers Association's (POA) ef- fort to remove Red Bluff Police Chief Paul Nan- fito from his post. Maria told the City Council that if he were ap- pointed to the vacant seat, "I would entirely re- cuse myself from the ongoing issue regarding the Police Department. At the same time the county will continue to de- velop plans for a brand new building near the Red Bluff Community and Senior Cen- ter at 1015 Kimball Road. A leaky roof and HVAC problems at the existing li- brary, 645 Madison St., have caused county officials to ex- amine both temporary and quicker solutions than the previously approved con- struction of a new building. The parent company of the Daily News put the 545 Diamond Ave. building up for sale in May 2014, a few months after the county had conducted a property search for a new location for the li- brary. The Daily News plans to relocate to a smaller office space in Red Bluff. The board's preferred choice was to construct a new building at the Commu- nity Center site. The county has set aside $4 million for the project. The library's re- location is being forced by plans to expand the Tehama County Jail to the existing li- brary location. Chief Administrator Bill Goodwin said the Library Ad Hoc Board Committee along with JK Architecture considered nine sites in the past month. On Wednesday afternoon they received a report of a dog stranded on the roof of a Johnson Street home. Red Bluff Police Sgt. Kevin Busekist said it ap- peared Lady, a pit bull, wandered outside a second story window that was be- ing propped open with a fan. In the process Lady knocked over the fan, which caused the window to shut behind her. La dy 's o wn er s wer en 't home at the time of the in- cident, but Red Bluff po- lice were alerted to a dog stranded on an inclined roof. Red Bluff Police called the Red Bluff Fire Department for assistance in the form of a ladder. Division Chief Matt Sho- bash suited up and climbed up to the roof. No one knew how the dog would react, but Lady turned out to be scared and rather eager to get out of her predicament. Shobash opened up the window and Lady ran in- side. "I've been a policeman a long time," Busekist said. "This is a first." As the public safety per- sonnel were getting ready to leave, Lady's owner, Jessica Barnett, arrived. Barnett said she became panicked when she pulled on to the street and saw the fire engine in front of her house. Her garage had pre- viously caught fire. This time firefighters were at her home to help for a different reason. "She just likes to climb," Barnett said, adding her Labrador is a bigger trou- blemaker. RED BLUFF ROOF!
