4 OHIO THETA Theta Data W ithout a doubt, the Ohio Theta Chapter is filled with strong tradition. For decades, new eras of men have bonded through the brotherhood. The Haverkamp brothers, Joseph '04, Robert '08, and Daniel '11, joined Ohio Theta for different reasons, but they all found the core of their college experience and a foundation of friendship in the fraternity. "We don't think about it a whole lot, but subconsciously our membership gives us an even bigger connection—to know that we were all a part of something bigger in college, we all contributed to its success, we all shared the same experiences. I think it means a lot even though we don't necessarily think about it often," shared Dan. Joe was the first brother to attend the University of Cincinnati and he was unsure if Greek life would be the right fit for him. "I actually gave my older sister a hard time for joining a sorority when she went to UC, but I had a very favorable initial impression of SigEp through the Balanced Man scholarship program, despite the fact that the only fraternity scholarship that I won didn't come from SigEp. I also knew Jake Scarpaci '01 and Mike Hussey '01 from high school and they were influential in me joining." All three brothers had different experiences but they agree that the Balanced Man program and its emphasis on leadership helped shape them into the men they are today. "Being in Ohio Theta taught me so much about being a leader. I'm not sure I could have received the hands-on experience in leading anywhere other than Ohio Theta. At 20 years old I was in charge of a quarter- million-dollar budget. Then, as a 21-year-old I was in charge of a 100-person organization. Where else could I say that? Not only that, I was continually being developed to succeed in those positions and become a better leader through individual mentoring, developmental conferences like CLA, and individual experiences like the Quest to Greece and Conclave. I was able to do so much and be a part of so many things and it made me a much better leader because of it," said Dan. Being given the opportunity to lead as an undergraduate was an important experience for Joe. "Overall, my undergraduate experience at Ohio Theta reinforced critical ideals that I feel are important to success, including striving to be your best on all your endeavors, getting involved in different activities in order to make a difference, and finding the balance in life between work and play. My experience as chapter president also taught me more specific lessons about managing, delegating, and conflict resolution. One of the best things I learned was the importance of building a talented team that not only can work well together, but also complements each other's strengths and weaknesses," added Joe. Ohio Theta's impact on their lives was so influential that Joe, Rob, and Dan knew they wanted to give to the capital campaign. "We wanted to support the campaign because we got so much out of SigEp and wanted to give something back. We never would have had these opportunities if it weren't for the alumni who had come before us. I look at this as my turn to give opportunities to the current and future SigEps at Ohio Theta. I think all alumni who feel that they benefitted from being a member should donate to the campaign because they wouldn't have had that experience if it weren't for alumni who came before them," shared Rob. "Strong support from alumni will allow the chapter to grow and be the best fraternity on campus. While prospective members are going to decide to join based on how they like the members of the chapter, it is also necessary to have good facilities to get them to check us out. Additionally, the house needs to be full of brothers who want to live there rather than requiring younger members to move in because we can't fill it otherwise," said Joe. "The future of Ohio Theta was dependent upon this addition. Our chapter had become too big for our home. The house needed to grow as our chapter grew. We maintained the legacy at 321 Joselin and kept the house that we have all shared as our home. In order to keep Ohio Theta the excellent chapter that it has been for so long, we needed this campaign. Alumni are securing the future of Ohio Theta at 321 Joselin Ave. so when you come back for Homecoming, or your kids attend UC, you will be able to come to SigEp and find the red door on the corner of Stratford and Joselin and know you are home," said Dan. Joe, Rob, and Dan all enjoy going back to the chapter house during Homecoming, Queen of Hearts, and alumni golf weekends, and keeping in touch with their fraternity brothers. All three live in Cincinnati. Dan works at Saint Xavier High School as a math teacher, football coach, and lacrosse coach. Joe is a vice president at American Money Management. Rob is a tax analyst at Fifth Third Bank.
