ByBobSalsberg The Associated Press NEWTON,MASS. Thehardy side of Boston might not extend to its aging public transit system. On Tuesday, the head of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority staunchly defended her de- cision to suspend rail ser- vice for more than 24 hours as crews struggled to clear tracks of snow and ice and hundreds of thousands of commuters scrambled to make alternative travel plans. Her remarks came a day after Gov. Charlie Baker called the performance of the MBTA — known in Bos- ton as the T — unacceptable during the recent snow- storms that dumped up to 7 feet in parts of the state. Officials announced that subways, trolleys and com- muter rail trains, idle since Monday night, would re- sume Wednesday at a re- duced level, with passen- gers warned to expect fewer cars and less frequent ser- vice on most lines of the na- tion's fifth-largest and old- est system. The first under- ground subways in the U.S. began in Boston in 1897. "We are running an ex- tremely aged system that is getting a pounding ev- ery single day," said Beverly Scott, MBTA general man- ager. She acknowledged that riders are "frustrated as heck. They are mad as heck." She said she hasn't spoken directly to Baker since the onslaught of win- ter storms began more than two weeks ago. Transit stations around the region, normally jammed with commuters on a weekday, were eerily silent Tuesday. The sprawling Riverside MBTA station in subur- ban Newton was virtually empty except for a handful of plows and workers trying to clear away snow. A few people who hadn't heard the news of the shut- down were surprised to learn there were no trains, including 91-year-old Ber- nard Udin, who walked sev- eral blocks to the station and planned to take a trol- ley to Newton Highlands to run some errands. "I'll go back home I guess," Udin said. "What else can I do?" The subway station at Davis Square in Somerville was padlocked, and some businesses in the neighbor- hood were closed. "The fact the trains aren't running means no one is heading to work," said Jeff Brussel, who was trying to find one of the few buses still operating that could get him to Boston. "But I'm on a project with a deadline, and everyone is freaking out. So I'm going to do what I can." Scott said she made the call to shut down rail ser- vice in part after dozens of trains broke down Monday after losing contact with the electrified third rail, in- cluding one in which pas- sengers were stranded for more than two hours. She said upgrading the system would require more invest- ment in new equipment. Scott was appointed in 2012 after managing tran- sit systems in Atlanta, Sac- ramento and Rhode Island and holding leadership po- sitions in others including the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York. "I have been around 40 years. I have been through hurricanes. I've been through World Trade Cen- ter bombings, tornadoes coming ... 36 inches of snow, this ain't this woman's first rodeo," Scott said. PLEASE RECYCLE THIS NEWSPAPER. Thank you! By Joe Mandak The Associated Press PITTSBURGH Police caught up to a man try- ing to flee assault charges because he posted a selfie on Facebook while sitting on a Greyhound bus out of town, a police chief said Tuesday. "We like it when dumb criminals assist us in our investigation," Ambridge police Chief James Mann told the Beaver County Times, which first re- ported the arrest. Mann told The Associ- ated Press that the suspect, 22-year-old Donald Harri- son, had been living in the borough about 20 miles northwest of Pittsburgh when he was charged with assaulting a woman and refusing to let her leave her apartment after an ar- gument on Jan. 24. An hour after the woman called police, po- lice learned that Harri- son, who is originally from Spartansburg, South Caro- lina, posted the Facebook message, "IT'S TIME TO LEAVE PA." Police couldn't find him right away, but Mann said the woman called him Sunday afternoon after she noticed the Facebook selfie with the message saying, "OMW TO SPARTANS- BURG SC SAY A PRAYER FOR ME." Mann said the picture appeared to show Har- rison sitting in a bus or airplane and, acting on a hunch, he called the Grey- hound bus terminal in Pittsburgh and learned a bus to Spartansburg had left 15 minutes earlier. Af- ter learning it would stop in Youngstown, Ohio, Mann explained the situa- tion to Greyhound and ar- ranged for Youngstown po- lice to arrest Harrison on a warrant he faxed them.
