The Tehama Country Visitor Center, along with North Valley Services, will be sponsoring a 5K — 3.1 miles run — and a 5K Relay at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 14 at the Red Bluff Recre- ation Area at the south end of Sale Lane. The race and run is de- signed for runners who want the excitement of the run. Runners can either run the 5K by themselves or run it as a relay with a partner. The relay is set up to have the first runner run 1 mile and the second run- ner run 2.1 miles to the fin- ish thus creating a team ef- fort. Registration forms can be obtained at Tehama Country Visitor Center, or at one of the local gyms in Red Bluff. The cost is $20 per runner, and includes a shirt, snacks, drinks and fun. Awards will be given to the winners of the four categories in the relay, and to the top three in each age division in the 5K. Call Tehama Country Visitor Center at 529-0133 for information. Like know- ing how to chill a can of soda, a bottle of beer or wine — from room tempera- ture to icy cold in just a couple of minutes! Seri- ously, I love this. QUICK CHILL. Need to chill wine, beer or soda in a hurry? Get a bowl or other vessel that will accommodate the item either as it stands or lies on its side. First, place the item to be cooled into the bowl or pan. Next add a good amount of ice plus one or two tablespoons of table salt (or rock salt if you have it). Fill with enough water so the item is cov- ered. Stir to distribute the salt. This will thor- oughly chill a can of soda or beer in just two minutes, or up to five minutes for a bottle of wine. ZERO-SUM GAME. Deposit your paycheck in your checking account and immediately start telling every dollar where to go. If you give every dollar a job to do, you'll be less likely to experi- ence money drains. At the end of the month, move whatever amount remains into sav- ings to zero out your ac- count, instead of seeing it as some kind of found money you can just blow. The goal is to create a zero-sum plan where you leave no dollar "unspent." TRAVEL LIGHT. If you're preparing for a trip, clean out your wallet down to the bare neces- sities, keeping two credit or debit cards with you. Keep one card in the ho- tel safe or well-hidden in your room so you have a way to pay for things if the card you're carrying is stolen. PRIMARILY STORE BRAND. Change your grocery shopping mind- set to always opting for the generic or store brand. Acquiesce to the name brand only when you have compelling ev- idence, experience or in- formation that leads you to believe that it really is superior and worth the extra cost. These days, most generic or store brand items are the same product inside. Only the packaging is different. HARD TO CHARGE. If you are hesitant to carry your credit card with you for fear you might use it — but you're more uncomfortable leaving it at home in case you have an emer- gency — there's a solu- tion. Place the credit card into a small enve- lope and seal it. On the envelope in large red let- ters write "For Emer- gency ONLY!" and below that, "Remember Your Debt." This plan should stop you from using plastic impulsively, but give you assurance that you have it in the face of a true emergency. MIND CONTROL. Be- fore you walk into a store, pause and con- centrate on your mis- sion. Determine that you will go in, accom- plish your goal and get out as quickly as possible. Stick to your list because that is all you need. As- sure yourself that if you see something you sim- ply must have that is not on the list, you can come back later. You probably won't. If a taxpayer or anyone in their household is enrolled in a health plan through the Health Insurance Market- place in 2014, they'll get Form 1095-A, Health In- surance Marketplace State- ment. Taxpayers will receive Form 1095-A from the Mar- ketplace where they pur- chased their coverage, not the IRS. This form should arrive in the mail from their Marketplace by early Febru- ary. They should wait to re- ceive their Form 1095-A be- fore filing their taxes. "Taxpayers who get their health insurance through the Marketplace should be aware that they'll need Form 1095-A in order to file their 2014 federal tax re- turn," said IRS spokesman David Tucker II. Form 1095-A will tell them the dates of coverage, total amount of the monthly premiums for their insur- ance plan, information they may use to determine the amount of their premium tax credit, and any amounts of advance payments of the premium tax credit. Taxpayers will use the in- formation to calculate the amount of their premium tax credit and reconcile ad- vance payments of the pre- mium tax credit made on their behalf to their insur- ance provider with the pre- mium tax credit they are claiming on their tax re- turn. To do this, taxpayers will use Form 8962, Pre- mium Tax Credit (PTC), which they file with their tax return. If a taxpayer does not re- ceive their Form 1095-A by early February, they should contact the state or federal Marketplace from which they received coverage. If they believe any informa- tion on your Form 1095-A is incorrect, they should contact the state or federal Marketplace from which they received coverage. The Marketplace may need to send them a corrected Form 1095-A. Taxpayers may receive more than one Form 1095-A if different members of their household had differ- ent health plans, if they up- dated their coverage infor- mation during the year, or if they switched plans dur- ing the year.
