ByDavidBauder The Associated Press NEW YORK NBC an- nounced Tuesday that it is suspending Brian Wil- liams as "Nightly News" an- chor and managing editor for six months without pay for misleading the public about his experiences cov- ering the Iraq War. NBC chief executive Steve Burke said Williams' actions were inexcusable and jeopardized the trust he has built up with view- ers during his decade as the network's lead anchor. But he said Williams deserved a second chance. Williams apologized last week for saying he was in a helicopter that was hit by a grenade while covering the Iraq War in 2003. Instead, he was in a group of heli- copters and another was hit, and some veterans in- volved in the mission called him out on it. "Brian misrepresented events which occurred while he was covering the Iraq War in 2003," NBC News President Deborah Turness said in a memo. "It then be- came clear that on other occasions Brian had done the same while telling that story in other venues. This was wrong and completely inappropriate for someone in Brian's position." Turness said Lester Hold would continue to substi- tute for Williams as anchor. She also said the net- work's probe into Williams' statements is continuing. Shortly after it happened during a reporting trip to Iraq in 2003, Williams ex- plained on NBC that one of a group of helicopters he had been flying with had been hit by a rocket-pro- pelled grenade. When he appeared with Letterman a decade later, the story changed to where his heli- copter had been hit, which Williams now admits is false. It wasn't until he told the same story on "Nightly News" last month and vet- erans who had been there complained that the embel- lishment emerged. In Israel in 2006, Wil- liams explained to his news viewers that he'd been on an Israeli helicopter and saw a trail of smoke and dust where Hezbollah rock- ets had landed in the Is- raeli countryside, and de- scribed seeing rockets be- ing launched six miles from his location. The story became more dramatic when he appeared on "The Daily Show" a month later. "Here's a view of rockets I have never seen, passing underneath us, 1,500 feet beneath us," Williams said. "And we've got the gunner doors on this thing, and I'm saying to the general, some four-star, 'It wouldn't take much for them to ad- just the aim and try to do a ring toss right through our open doors, would it?'" (An Israeli army offi- cial who traveled with Wil- liams that day, Jacob Dal- lal, on Tuesday called the anchor's account "generally reasonable." He said it was fair to assume rockets flew beneath their helicopter). 'NIGHTLY NEWS' ANCHOR NBC suspends Williams for 6 months without pay STARPIX—THEASSOCIATEDPRESSFILE NBC says it is suspending Brian Williams as "Nightly News" anchor for six months without pay for misleading the public about his experiences covering the Iraq War. By Brady Mccombs The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY A Mor- mon man who gained no- toriety over the past de- cade for running a website that offers doubting Latter- day Saints a forum to chat has been kicked out of the religion. John Dehlin announced the decision from regional church leaders Tuesday. He becomes the second high- profile church member to be excommunicated in the past year in what Mormon scholars consider to be the Utah-based faith's way of keeping dissenters in line. A regional church leader in North Logan told Dehlin in a letter that Mormon of- ficials made a unanimous decision to excommunicate him for apostasy, defined by the church as repeatedly acting in clear public oppo- sition to the faith. While not a lifelong ban, excommunication is a rare move that amounts to the harshest punishment avail- able for a church member. The letter from Bryan King says Dehlin is being kicked out not because he doubted and asked ques- tions about church doc- trine, but because he made categorical statements op- posing the faith that were disseminated on his web- site. King wrote that Deh- lin's actions have led others to leave the faith. "You do not have the right to remain a member of the church in good stand- ing while openly and pub- licly trying to convince oth- ers that church teachings are in error," King wrote. The decision comes two days after Dehlin met with church leaders in a four- hour disciplinary hearing. Dehlin, 45, hoped he wouldn't be excommuni- cated but told church lead- ers he could not in good con- science stop operating his website, Mormonstories.org. Dehlin said he was told last year that his website and his public support of same-sex marriage were reasons he was being ac- cused of apostasy. But Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a statement that while Dehlin's views on gay marriage go against church teachings, they were not the reasons for his discipline. The letter cites three key issues, including Deh- lin's belief that the Book of Mormon and Book of Abra- ham are fraudulent and his rejection of the religion be- ing the "true church with power and authority from God." Hawkins said excommu- nication is not the end, but rather the "beginning of the road back to full fel- lowship." People who are kicked out or leave the church are wel- come to return "through the grace and Atonement of Je- sus Christ," Hawkins said. The move is likely to send ripples through the Mormon community. It comes on the heels of the June ouster of Kate Kelly, founder of a group pushing for women to be allowed in the religion's lay clergy. Scholars say Kelly and Dehlin are the most high- profile examples of excom- munication proceedings since 1993. That year, the church disciplined six Mor- mon writers who ques- tioned church doctrine, ousting five and kicking out a sixth temporarily. "The church is send- ing a message with this: 'Don't express your doubts or concerns publicly, or you risk excommunication,'" said Mike Huband, a Deh- lin supporter and active Mormon. "They are say- ing to those people on the fringes, 'We don't want you in the church.' It's very dis- appointing." To supporters like Hu- band, Dehlin is a hero who risked his standing in the faith to create a much- needed forum where church members could openly dis- cuss sensitive or controver- sial issues about the faith. About 200 supporters held a weekend vigil for Dehlin outside the church building where his disciplinary hear- ing took place. Huband said Dehlin helped him navigate a re- cent faith crisis and figure out a way to focus on the positives of Mormonism and stay in the religion. Hu- band said he thinks Dehlin drew church leaders' wrath because he brought to light many unflattering issues about the church's past, in- cluding the early days of polygamy under Joseph Smith when the founder had a teen bride and mar- ried other men's wives. To his detractors, Deh- lin is a Latter-day Saint who long ago stopped believing in the faith's core tenets and has painted himself as a martyr. By Curt Anderson The Associated Press MIAMI Drivers at drunken-driving check- points don't have to speak to police or even roll down their windows. They just have to place their li- cense and registration on the glass, along with a note saying they have no comment, won't permit a search and want a lawyer. At least, that's the view of a South Florida attorney. WarrenRedlichcontends the commonly-used check- points violate drivers' con- stitutional rights. He and an associate have created a website detailing their tac- tics. They've even made vid- eos, one viewed more than 2 million times on the Inter- net, of their refusals to in- teract with police. Doubts over the legal- ity — and wisdom — of the tactics have been ex- pressed by legal experts and local authorities. Redlich, of Boca Raton, said his goal is not to pro- tect drunken drivers, but to protect the innocent. He says some of his cli- ents who passed breath-al- cohol tests still faced DUI charges because the officer said he detected an odor of alcohol or the person had slurred speech. "The point of the card is, you are affirmatively as- serting your rights without having to speak to the po- lice and without opening your window," he said. Not surprisingly, this does not sit well with law enforcement officials who insist drivers must speak in order to make the checkpoints work. And, they point out the U.S. Su- preme Court in 1990 up- held the use of random DUI checkpoints, con- cluding they don't vio- late constitutional protec- tions against unreasonable search and seizure. "They wouldn't be al- lowedoutofthatcheckpoint untiltheytalktous.Wehave a legitimate right to do it," said Sheriff David Shoar of St. Johns County, presi- dent of the Florida Sheriffs Association. "If I was out there, I wouldn't wave them through. I want to talk to that person more now." The widely viewed video was shot Dec. 31 at a check- point in Levy County, Flor- ida, by Redlich's associate Jeff Gray. In it, Gray ap- proaches the officers with the flyer, his license, regis- tration and insurance card in a plastic bag dangling outside the slightly open car window. The officers briefly examine it with a flashlight and then allow him to continue. In bold type, the flyer states: "I remain silent. No searches. I want my lawyer." PoliceacrossFloridahave seen the video. A spokes- woman for a large metro police agency says Gray's experience at the check- point doesn't mean the no- talk tactic is legitimate.
