Everyone is welcome. Lots of music and fellowship. Israel talk Tom Meyer, newly arrived from Jerusalem, Israel, will be in Red Bluff on Nov. 12 to give a Seminar on the Archae- ology and Geography of Israel 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sunrise Bible Fellowship, 956 Jackson St. Meyer has lived the last four years in Israel among Jews, Christians and Muslims obtaining a first class knowledge of Israel's land, history, culture and religion. While in Israel, he was been able to live with the Bedouins in the desert and Christian monks in the wilderness as a part of his research. Meyer is also the author of numerous books on the his- tory of Israel. His books and a set of maps of Israel will be available for sale at this event. More information can be found at www.thescripturecan- notbebroken.com. Art in faith lecture St. Peter's Episcopal Church will host a lecture exploring how Christian faith has influenced art throughout history. Former art teacher and student of the Christian religion, Marvin Woodstrup will present an illustrated depiction of how art reflects the Christian faith over the past 2,000 years entitled Reflections of the Christian Faith as Seen through the Great Masters at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, at St. Peter's Marsh Cottage. He will explore how the great masters imagined and created artwork to bring to life the stories of Christ and visions of the New Testament. Images from huge wall frescos to tiny glazed ceramic pottery will be examined asking the questions:"How close is the artist's vision to that of reality?" and "How has art assisted mankind in interpreting faith and belief?" Refreshments will follow this presentation. Due to limited space, please RSVP by Nov. 1. The lec- ture is free. For more information call 527-5205 or send an email to stpeters@sbcglobal.net. Woodstrup LAST DAYS BEGAN WITH RESURRECTUION The Rev. Pat Rush, pastor, Vis- itation Catholic Church, Kansas City, Mo.: I do indeed believe that we are in the last days, but, lest you misunderstand me, that has nothing at all to do with whether or not the world will end soon. Jesus Christ, through his death and resurrection, has already passed to the fullness of eternal life and won that same possibility for us. In Christ the battle against sin and death is won, and these days, All Hallow's Eve to All Saints'Day A man visiting a mental hospital asked the director how he made deci- sions about committing someone for treatment. The director replied that it was much simpler than most people think. A prospective patient is shown a bathtub full of water and given a teaspoon, a cup, and a bucket. He is asked how a normal person would empty the tub, "And so, Sir, what would you do to empty this tub?" The visitor replied that he would use the bucket, it being the largest con- tainer. "No, Sir, a normal person would reach into the tub and pull the plug. Would you like a bed under the window?" The differences between the pagan rendition of Halloween and the tradi- tional Christian observance of All Hallows Eve – the evening before All Saints Day – are as fundamental as the differences between hoisting a bucket and pulling a plug. The origi- nal name of Halloween was Samhain – pronounced Sowhain – and it was a Druid holiday on which it was believed the realms of the dead and the living came so close that travel was possible back and forth. The dead were believed plotting to kidnap living children and consign them to hell. Elaborate costumes were devised to hopefully frighten the dead more than they could frighten the liv- ing and thus protect families from assault. The Church co-opted the occasion in the fourth century, pro- claiming All Saints – a day of cele- bration of Jesus' abolition of death by His Cross and Resurrection. In other words, the one holiday attempted to cope with death while the other pro- claimed the transcendent and abun- dant life in Christ Jesus forever. Druid observances included trick- or-treating, in which revelers either were given things of value from food God is moving all creation toward that same goal. Think of it in terms of the last days of World War II: We live in the time between victo- ry in Europe (May, 1945) and vic- tory in Japan (August, 1945). There still may be some casualties but, for the world, the war is effec- tively ended and the good guys won. These last days began with Christ's death and resurrection nearly 2,000 years ago. In these last days, the Risen Christ, by his presence within the universe and through the Holy Spirit, shares with the world, espe- to money or they did violent and ugly things to householders. The tradition of the jack-o-lantern comes from the Druid practice of hanging prisoners from trees in wooden cages and burning them alive. Again, the idea was to cope with the valley of the shadow of death by being the mean- est inhabitant of the valley. Christian celebrations included baptisms, the cel- ebration of Holy Commu- nion, worship and min- istry opportunities and an overall festival of celebra- tion of the intrinsic and composite value of all the members of the Kingdom of God taken together. All Saints is as much a cele- bration of the Family of God as Samhain was a celebration of every man for himself. For centuries the transition worked was resurrected. These cooperative activities continue year after year in Chico and the fruit continues to pour in. How should Christians address themselves to Hal- loween? For that matter, James Wilson GodTalk well. In the last century revivals of the old pagan traditions resulted in the kind of innocent activities for chil- dren as trick-or-treating for candy (ugly pranks not included) and Hal- loween carnivals at schools. But in the past couple of decades razor blades in the candy and increasingly violent and sex slathered revelry has made a big league comeback. The city of Chico, for example, was known all over the country as a place of violence and high crime rates over Halloween until about five years ago. At that time churches banded togeth- er to walk and pray the streets; the police welcomed praying people into their command posts, and Christians visited fraternity houses to offer home-made pies, pizzas, and prayer. Calls for police assistance dropped off to zero and the city's reputation cially with humanity, his access to the Father. According to St. Paul, this is God's "plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in Christ," who "will reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet." THE EARTH IS ONLY AT ITS BEGINNING The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City: No. I don't believe that. I can't even conceive of what "last days" means. Time ends? Then what comes how should peace loving people of all types address themselves? We can and should re-claim the day – never mind who says they got there first. We can reclaim it through acts of worship of the Living God and service in His Name. We can encourage our kids to dress up – but as plumbers, preachers, and parents – the run-of-the-mill saints who made a commu- nity a place worth raising your kids in. We can stress the life that is made available through Christ Jesus and supply our own treats to the kids and adults who come to our parties. We can make sure that every kid on our neighborhoods has a wholesome place to go instead of the dangers of the streets of even our safest neighborhoods any more. We can make sure we are spreading the love of God on that night of all nights, instead of seeking dark places in which to hide from the darkness. We can think and live outside of the boxes we are given – that we think are the best we can do. Instead of hoisting the bucket we can reach in and pull the plug – praising God for abundant life and bath tub plugs. James A. Wilson is the author of Living As Ambassadors of Relationships and The Holy Spirit and the End Times – available at local bookstores or by e-mailing him at praynorthstate@charter.net. Voices of Faith: Do you believe we're in the last days? after that ? Life ends? Then what about the energy, power, inde- structible spirit that is the life force? The human species perish- es? Maybe so, but as evolution has taught us, a greater more-intelli- gent species would come into being. Every "last" of anything is immediately followed by a "first" of something. In one fashion or another, life will continue on and advance way beyond our present state. Approximately 14 billion years ago, as a result of the big bang, existence as we know it burst out, and the universe was created. In the beginning there were only tiny little ultra-microscopic bits of physicality. But those bits had intelligence, and they were infused with momentum to become something more. Fourteen billion years later, those tiny sub-atomic bits have evolved into "us," this world and all of it s inhabitants. The wisdom, intelligence, creative design and other unimaginable attributes of "spirit" have brought us to this point.
