Red Bluff routed visiting Oroville 56-13, Fri- day night on Homecoming, as the Spartans scored every time they touched the football. Spartans assistant coach Dave Rottenberg pointed out things went so right for his guys that even when they missed an extra point they received a second opportunity to convert it. The success started early as the Spartans dialed up a set play on the opening kickoff return. Michael Gonzales took a lateral and sprinted up the right sideline, with quality blocking in front of him he reached the Oroville 4-yard line before being tackled. "That was the play I credit to get us started — get us going." Red Bluff coach John Miller said. "We knew we could do that kind of stuff all year long, it just hasn't happened." The Spartans took advantage of the great kickoff return as Gage Grabfelder ran in a touch- down on their first play. After an Oroville three-and-out the Spartans took over again. Ty Smith started things off with a 30-yard end around and five plays later Grabfelder scored again on a 1-yard plunge. Red Bluff forced another Oroville three-and- out and again drove down for a touchdown. The key play of the drive was a third-and- eight conversion when Garrett Sandow connect- ed with Mitch Fox on an 18-yard pass play. Two plays later Sandow kept it himself and rushed in another Spartans' score from eight yards out. With a 21-0 lead, the Spartans may have got- ten a little too greedy as they attempted an onside kick. The kick failed to go the minimum 10 yards and Oroville took over at the Red Bluff 46-yard line. Tigers quarterback Dane Dugan completed passes to Ryan Myers and Justin York on the drive and Baku Jones put Oroville on the score- board with a 2-yard run. Red Bluff didn't blink and countered with another scoring drive, but the game turned ugly for a moment after Tyler Reed scored on a 1-yard run. The play continued well after the whistle, and eventually punches were thrown by several play- ers. Officials booted a handful of players from the game, including both Tigers and Spartans. It would turn out to be an isolated incident. Outside of a single late hit flag in the second half, the physicalness of the game was contained from whistle to whistle the remainder of the way. Once play resumed, Oroville would throw an interception on its next drive as Cody Case picked off the pass for Red Bluff and returned it to the Tigers' 13-yard line where Reed rushed in his second score of the game. The Tigers then fumbled on their next offen- sive play, which was recovered by Gonzales. Ty Smith scored on an 11-yard run just before half to give the Spartans a 42-7 lead. After setting everything in motion with the big return and recovering a fumble, Gonzalez got on the board himself when he took in a score from 41 yards out on Red Bluff's first possession of the second half. Anthony Garaventa recovered another Oroville fumble to give the Spartans the ball back. This time it was Case taking it form a yard out to complete the Red Bluff scoring. With a running clock the entire fourth quarter, the Tigers added one final score in the late stages when Jones rushed in his second touchdown of the game. The win was just the second for Miller, both came against Oroville, but the second year coach he was quick to shift all credit to the players on the field. "It's for the kids. The kids have really worked their tails off this year," he said. "They've given it a 100 percent all year and it just hasn't happened until now." Twelve different Spartans carried the ball. Smith finished with a team high 73 yards on four Coach Miller on the 2nd quarter incident "I don't know exactly what all happened, what transpired. I'm getting our side of the story from the kids. Unfortunately the tempers flared a little bit and our kids don't back down. They move forward, they play tough from whistle to whistle and when it got a little heat- ed after the whistle we're not going to back down from anybody. Not that we're looking for that kind of stuff obviously." "We talked to the kids and obviously a cou- ple of them lost their heads. They're fighting for their teammates and that's what we've taught them all year long. You're not playing for your- self in this sport you're really playing for the other 10 guys on the field with you or the other 27 guys standing on the sideline. So when you preach that all year long that it's a team sport and you're really playing for those other kids and you see those other kids unfortunately get swung on and get hit then they're going to go out and defend them. That's all they were doing. A couple kids came to the defense of other kids out there. They should have walked away, but our kids we've preached to them all year long you're playing this not for yourself but for other people." carries. Gonzalez had 56 yards on three carries. Reed carried nine times for 48 yards. Grabfelder had 42 on six carries. Kyle Case had four carries for 40 yards. Tuck- er Gulliford carried four times for 16 yards and Sandow picked up 16 yards on two carries. Brad Raines had a 13-yard gain, Fox had a 12- yard carry, Andrew Reedy picked up six yards, Garrett Spangler carried once for four yards and Case had a 1-yard touchdown run. Sandow attempted just two passes, complet- ing one to Fox for 18 yards. Niklas Ericsson converted all eight of his PAT attempts.
