Crisis Intervention Team Recognizes Public Safety, Health, Court Professionals Public safety, mental health and court professionals were honored at the third annual Fayetteville Cumberland Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Awards ceremony Jan. 27 at the Fayetteville Police Department. CIT is a jail diversion program designed to provide a specialized law enforcement response to individuals experiencing a crisis related to mental illness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Cumberland, Harnett and Lee counties presented the awards to the following recipients, from left, Paramedic of the Year Capt. Matt Parker, Cumberland County EMS (Lt. Leslie Campbell accepting award on Parker's behalf); Trainer of the Year Doug Parrish, Cape Fear Valley Medical Center; Detention Officer of the Year Cpl. Robert Naylor, Cumberland County Detention Center; Police Officer of the Year Markus Schell, Fayetteville Police Department; Magistrate of the Year Jackie Paul-Ray, Cumberland County Courts; Deputy of the Year Lt. Robert Dicke, Cumberland County Sheriff 's Office; CIT Exemplary Service Award recipient John Bain, Alliance Behavioral Healthcare; and CIT Champion of the Year Dorothy Johnson, National Alliance on Mental Illness of Cumberland, Harnett and Lee counties. The Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center will host North Carolina Poet Laureate Shelby Stephenson Feb. 8 from 3 to 4:45 p.m. at the Headquarters Library Pate Room. Gov. Pat McCrory recently appointed Stephenson, a Johnston County native, to be the state's poet laureate. Stephenson was also inducted into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame in 2014. Stephenson retired from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 2010 after 30 years as a professor teaching literature and creative writing. Stephenson will talk about the craft of writing poetry and will read from his works. Stephenson's books include "Middle Creek Poems," "Carolina Shout!", "Fiddledeedee", "Possum" and "Play My Music Anyhow."
