Corning 46 Yreka 0 By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor CORNING — So much for the expected Northern Athletic League dogfight. The Corning Cardinals played as complete a game as a team can play, Friday night, handing visiting Yreka a 46-0 whooping. Yreka was held to 79 yards of offense and four first downs as the automatic mercy-rule running clock started ticking off the seconds of the blowout as soon as the fourth quarter start- ed. Meanwhile, Corning did whatever it want- ed, whenever it wanted, as it seemed everything was working for the Cardinals, who improved to 5-3 on the season and 2-1 in league play. And it started early. On the second play of the game John Lowe made an acrobatic interception of a Dean Schafer pass to give the Cardinals the ball. Lowe and "little" brother Thomas Lowe then switched off carries as Corning marched down field 60 yards as Johnny punched in an opening touchdown. After a Yreka, three-and-out, Corning went back to work. This time on a third-and-five from the Corn- ing 45 yard-line, Ryan Holland with no receivers open, tucked it and took off running. With some big blocks from the Cardinals, Hol- land reached the sideline and was gone from there. "Initially just coming out we've been a little bit exotic with some of our play calling," Corn- ing coach John Studer said. "We kind of felt we had an offensive game plan where let's go after them a little bit lets take advantage of Thomas Lowe, the sophomore, and try to play the ground and pound game a little bit." It worked as the offensive line of Austin Mallon, Cody Long, Dennis Womack, Roy Madrigal, Erik Miranda and Cody Hoag played great. Yreka's third possession of the game was another three-and-out, which included a third down sack made by a blitzing Holland from his safety spot. Corning took over ready to go back to work. This time the Cardinals threw J.D. Whited into the running mix and with the Lowes marched down to the Yreka 1-yard-line, before John Lowe would punch in his second touch- down of the game. Corning pooched the ensuing kickoff and it bounced off a Yreka player and into the hands of a hustling Thomas Profant for another Car- dinals possession. On fourth-and-seven form the Yreka 26, Holland threw a pass toward the end zone, which Cole Barnes grabbed as he reached over a defender in the air and hung on for a 27-0 Cardinals lead. Yreka finally managed a first down on its next possession, but their five-play drive stalled at the Corning 41. Once again it was time for Holland to break off a run. This time it was a 55-yard touchdown rush as the senior quarterback finished his day on offense with two carries for an even 100 yards. Ezekiel Rodriguez would recover a Yreka fumble before halftime as the Cardinals led 34- 0 at the break. Adding to the blowout, Corning received the opening kickoff and of course knew what to do with it. The Lowes and Whited marched Corning down to the red zone again, where Rodriguez punched in another Cardinals' score. Yreka fumbled on its first offense snap of the second half as John Lowe recovered it for yet another Cardinals possession. The Cardinals needed just three plays before Thomas Lowe rumbled in for a touchdown to complete his 89-yard rushing day. John Lowe finished with 50 rushing yards, two touchdowns, an interception and a fumble recovery — not a bad way to celebrate his 18th birthday. His younger brother, Thomas Lowe with 89 rushing yards continued to assert himself as another weapon in the Cardinals' rushing attack despite being a sophomore playing at the Big Valley outlasts Mercy 56 Big Valley Mercy 42 By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor The Warriors played one of their best games of the season, but ran out of steam, Saturday, in a 56-42 loss to Big Valley. The visiting Cardinals had an advantage in size — both physically and in numbers that eventually wore down Mercy. The Warriors, who have a forfeit win to their credit, were looking for their first victory of the season on the field this season and took a 28-22 lead into halftime against the 5-1 Cardinals. Big Valley stormed back in the third quarter as running back Ben Torres completed a four-touchdown performance. Torres caught three touch- down passes from Hunter Hawkins. Daily News photo by Rich Greene Isaac Williams and Brenten James wrap up a Cardinal. Nick Shultz and Tyler Armstrong each added two running scores for the Cardi- nals. Mercy had the first half lead behind strong defensive play and some big plays out of the offense from Matt Misener and Jordan Stasinowsky. The pair hooked up on an 85-yard touchdown pass and Misener added scoring runs of 51 and 35 yards. Stasinowsky also had a 16- yard touchdown run for Mercy. Brenten James added a late touchdown for Mercy from 17 yards out. The Warriors face Liberty Christian next Saturday. The game is officially a home game for Liberty Chris- tian, but it will be played at Mercy's home field at Sacred Heart in Red Bluff. Kickoff time is scheduled for Noon. varsity level. "The first couple weeks it was so much pres- sure, as the year went on I felt a little more pressure cause the team expected more out of me and then when I got the job done I just got confident." Thomas said. With the game in hand by the third quarter the Corning coaching staff made sure everyone on the roster got some game time. Fernando Gonzalez made the most of his, picking up 38 yards on three carries. Holland's 100 yards led the team statistical- ly. Whited picked up 71 yards on nine carries. Nathan Fultz had three carries for 16 yards, Mikey Simcox had six yards, Chayce Maday had five rushing yards and Colton Conoly and Profant had carries as well. Quentin McCormick made four extra points. Holland went 1-for-4 passing with the lone completion the 26-yard touchdown pass to Barnes. Yreka's Schafer and Kade Culp combined to go 0-for-6 in the passing game. Christian Charles led the Miners with 34 rushing yards as Yreka's offense was shut down. It wasn't what many, including the Corning coaches, had expected coming into the game. "I believe they're a really explosive offense, but they never really got a chance to get going and I credit our defense for that," Studer said. A lot of credit has to go to defensive coach Bob Hall, who at times seemed to be calling Yreka's plays before they even did. "We did everything right," John Lowe said. "Hall had the game plan mapped out." Next for the Cardinals is a road trip to Shas- ta Lake to meet up with Central Valley in their final NAL game of the season. Likely at stake is the No. 4 seed in the Division-II playoffs and the first round home playoff game that comes with it. John Lowe said he doesn't expect the win over Yreka to get to the Cardinals' heads. "No we can't do that," he said. "The same thing happened against Las Plumas and we came out flat. This is a big win and we needed it, but we gotta' come out solid against Central Valley cause they're a great team." Foothill speeds past Red Bluff Red Bluff 10 Foothill 48 The long, brutal road trip is finally over, although with another loss as baggage as Red Bluff fell 48-10 to Foothill, Friday night. "We just did not get rolling," Red Bluff coach John Miller said. Red Bluff was within 17-10 at one point until Foothill took over the game with their team speed. Miller said the Spartans moved the ball fairly well on offense, but some turnovers ended up costing them. "We moved the ball, we just couldn't punch it in the end zone. Ty Smith returned a kickoff for a touch- down and had a strong game at defensive back. Niklas Ericsson added a 42-yard field goal for Red Bluff. The Spartans return home for Homecom- ing against Oroville. Then close out the sea- son the following week by playing host to Las Plumas.
