The Vineyard Church, 738 Walnut St. in Red Bluff is planning a fun night of mystery solving, food and laughter start- ing at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14. Dress is elegant as the setting is a Hollywood af- terparty. During the so- cializing, a homicide will take place and it will be up to the guests to uncover clues that reveal the cul- prit. Tickets are $30 each and can be purchased by calling 527-2449. VINEYARDCHURCH Nightofmysteryandfunplanned I have nothing but the highest respect for story- tellers. I am one myself. The film, Ex- odus: Gods and Kings, develops an interesting premise. It depicts Mo- ses as a ded- icated athe- ist who is unmasked as a closet Jew and himself shocked to dis- cover his real origins. He is exiled after attempts made on his life by Phar- oah; upon his return from the burning bush and a boy representing God he leads an insurgency, only later deciding to let God free his people. God wins in the end and Moses comes to faith. He exhorts his peo- ple to live on faith alone hereafter. My problem is it is only a story, and a stolen one at that. Storytellers should let imagination soar anywhere it wants to go. But to take an existing story, recast it to suit ones' prejudice, and palm it off as the authentic version is both fraudulent and arrogant. The result is usually sub-par on multi- ple levels. Exodus defies logic when it depicts the Hebrew peo- ple as having the faith Mo- ses lacks; their collec- tive witness leads their leader to recognize God and to follow Him. Lib- eration movements have never worked that way and — of course — the authen- tic story in Scripture has it the other way around — the way it would have to be to work. Pharoah's re- peated attempts to kill Mo- ses while negotiating with this man he believes invin- cible make no sense and — of course — the real story expresses Pharoah's impo- tent rage, fueled by fear of a man clearly backed by a mighty God. The film de- fies common sense when the unbelieving Moses of- fers unquestioning accep- tance and grudging obe- dience to a vindictive little boy who claims to be an in- carnation of the very God in whom Moses does not believe. Ridley Scott justifies his abuse of scripture in an in- terview prior to release. He says only an atheist can storybook God objectively, insisting on a story that works. Why someone who has never encountered God is less biased than a per- son who knows Him per- sonally is beyond me. But Scott's ignorance explains the cruel hatred of this God toward the Egyptians who displease Him. The Bi- ble account — rooted in personal relationship with God — declares God's de- sire to save even the Egyp- tians if they but humble themselves. His objectivity falls flat again as we see the whole conflict beginning. Phar- oah — who with Moses be- lieves they are brothers at the outset — unquestion- ing believes the corrupt of- ficial that Moses is Hebrew. His hostility is rooted in a prophecy by an Egyptian priestess he scorns that the one saving his life in bat- tle will one day usurp his throne. When Moses saves his life in battle it is all over but the shouting. Re- ally? This "objective" story does not work. Truth to tell, the Bi- ble's rendition of the story works quite well on ev- ery level. We find a man raised as Egyptian royalty due to the intervention of a daughter to the older Pharoah — everybody knows where he comes from but he is treated as an exception so long as he lives as an exception. Schooled in the arrogance of ancient aristocracy he expects to be welcomed as a liberator after killing an Egyptian he sees mistreat- ing Hebrew slave. When the people do not bow to him and he fears expo- sure into the bargain he flees into the desert. Ar- riving in Midian he takes a wife and settles down to raising his family and his flock of sheep. Shocked by an encounter with God in a burning bush that will not consume itself, he finds every excuse he can to avoid the calling from God on his life. With help from his brother, Aaron, to compensate for his speech impediment he returns to Egypt, warns Pharoah re- peatedly to let his peo- ple go before each plague comes, and ultimately de- livers the Ten Command- ments to the people in the face of their idolatry in the Sinai Desert. Frankly, it is a much more coherent story than the knockoff we are offered by Ridley Scott. It depicts God as He is — loving and committed to sinners. I am not telling any- one to see or ignore this movie. It has its points and it is reasonably good entertainment. There is even reason to wonder if Moses — in his gradual re- laxation of his militant atheism and coming to a clearly reality-based faith — is a kind of surrogate for the producer/director's own search for the really real. But whether readers see the film or not, read the real story. Compare it to the knockoff. Think on it. Pray on it. There is pure gold in the real thing. GOD TALK Exodus: Gods and kings — somewhat Jim Wilson By Aya Batrawy The Associated Press JIDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA Amna Fatani knows she wants a brilliant career and a life different from that of Saudi women of her moth- er's generation who married early, usually to a husband not of their own choosing. The 27-year-old, study- ing for her master's degree at Georgetown University in Washington and hoping to someday become Saudi Arabia's first female labor minister, is part of a grow- ing number of Saudi women choosing to remain single through their 20s and into their 30s as they pursue other ambitions. The trend has ruffled ul- traconservatives who see it as an affront to the very foundations of the king- dom, where strict interpre- tations of Islam and rigid tribal codes have long dic- tated the terms of marriage. "My friends and I have reached a point (where) we're very specific about what we want," she said. "I need someone who trusts that if I need to do some- thing, I can make the de- cision to ask for help or choose to do it alone." Saudi women stand at the center of a societal pivot be- tween the kingdom's push for greater women's educa- tion and rights to work, and laws that give men final say over their lives. Women cannot travel, study abroad, marry or un- dergo certain medical pro- cedures without the per- mission of a male guardian — usually a father or hus- band, or in their absence, an older or even a younger brother. The growing number of single women has alarmed clerics, who have responded by pushing for early mar- riage and warning of al- leged evil consequences of "spinsterhood," such as sex outside wedlock. During a 2005 sermon, the imam of Mecca's Grand Mosque, Abdul-Rahman As-Sudais, raised an early outcry against "the dan- gerous phenomenon of life- long spinsterhood," saying it endangers "the commu- nity as a whole." Traditionally, women in Saudi Arabia are expected to be married by their early 20s. In 2011, more than 1.5 million Saudi women aged over 30 were single, accord- ing to the Economy and Planning Ministry. According to govern- ment figures, 3.3 million are women over 30 in this nation of 20 million peo- ple — and if the ministry's 2011 figure is unchanged, it means that about 45 per- cent of Saudi women over 30 are single. While women's rights activists agree there's a rise in the numbers of sin- gle women, some question the accuracy of the govern- ment's figure, saying it sup- ports the norm that Saudi men are allowed more than one wife. Women have been tak- ing on a greater role in public life, though their jobs are mostly in the ed- ucation sector. The Labor Ministry says there are more than 400,000 work- ing women in Saudi Ara- bia, compared to less than 55,000 before 2009. Women outnumber men in the kingdom's univer- sities, and there are tens of thousands of women among the 150,000 Saudis studying abroad on gov- ernment scholarships. Education is also changing women's atti- tudes toward marriage and giving them more confidence, said Hatoon al-Fassi, a professor of women's history in Saudi Arabia. "You can no lon- ger control these atti- tudes," she says. ISLAM Saudi single women challenge tradition in love and marriage Tehama County Church Directory RedBluff....
