Stormwater Inspector Uses Detective Skills to Protect Environment Along with their other duties, stormwater inspectors work throughout the city daily to prevent illicit discharges and discover illegal connections to the stormwater drainage system. This process of detection and elimination of stormwater pollutants protects and enhances local water quality and environment. There are many pollutants that are common in today's environment like cigarette butts, trash, pet waste, motor oil and other have a negative impact once they enter the storm drain waterways and, ultimately, the Cape Fear River. industrial air conditioning systems are located out of sight on rooftops where they are rarely noticed. Many contain glycol or similar oils and coolants. Various forms of glycol are colorless, odorless and commonly used in chilled water air conditioning systems. Glycol can be toxic and result in death if ingested. Older air conditioning units can accidentally discharge these materials when they experience a failure. Such was the unknown contaminant from a nearby stream back several had failed and discharged the glycol into the roof drains that wereconnected to the stormwater drainage system. The stormwater inspectors were able to identify the pollutant and require a contractor to cleanup. The property owner was educated on what had occurred and how to minimize future problems through plumbing changes and a regular maintenance program. In addition, a "secondary containment" feature was installed by the property owner to proactively guard against any future discharges to the stormwater system.
