BySharonMartin smartin@chicoer.com @SharonBMartin on Twitter CHICO The Pleasant Valley girls soccer team has been cruising, and with another win against Red Bluff Wednesday afternoon, the Vikings have yet to get a mark in the loss column. The Vikings (8-0-3) who are undefeated this season, defeated the Spartans (9-2) 4-0 on their home field. With the only blem- ish on their record being three tie games, the Vikings have con- tinued to get stronger. "It's been a good season," said Vikings coach Brett Silva. "Ev- ery tie we've had, we were frus- trated." On Wednesday, Torres got the offense started by scoring the first goal of the game. How- ever, Torres left the game early due to sickness. "We started very slowly," Silva said. "Red Bluff was do- ing a good job at throwing us off, after all we started sorting it out, but we started much slower than I wanted to start." Alloway, who played much of the game with double cov- erage, almost immediately fol- lowed Torres' goal with one of her own. She would later score again to put Vikings up 3-0. After halftime, Paige Bur- ditt would knock in another goal that slowly rolled passed a diving Cheyenne Houghtby, to make the score 4-0. Pleasant Valley's defense continued to give Red Bluff a difficult time at scoring goals. To try to break the shutout, a Red Bluff missed goal went wide-right and sailed out of bounds. PV's defense would hold off the Spartans, leading to their eighth victory of the season. "They were tough and they didn't make a lot of mistakes," Silva said about Red Bluff. "They put the pressure on." The Lady Spartans play at En- terprise today at 6 p.m. BOYS SOCCER Back in Red Bluff, Pleasant Valley beat the Spartan boys 6-2 Wednesday. In the hud- dle, he shouts at coaches one moment and shares a laugh with them the next. And in practice, he barks at individ- uals not hustling and respects only those who earn it. Anybody listening to Dray- mond Green quickly learns this is the way he approaches everything in life. Love him or hate him, it's that all-out en- ergy and no-nonsense attitude that has carried him from an overlooked second-round pick to one of the most important players on the NBA's best team. "One thing I've always been taught: you're not going to shoot great every night, you may have some turnovers some nights, but one thing you can always do is bring effort," Green said. "No matter what, no matter how I feel, always bring effort." While streaky shooters Ste- phen Curry and Klay Thomp- son are the stars, Green is the spark for everything else Golden State (31-5) needs. "I believe it takes a village, that no one man does anything by himself, the strength is in the people around them and the way people come together," Tomsula said at his nearly hour-long, intro- ductory press conference. Tomsula was promoted Wednesday after eight seasons as the defensive line coach, receiving a four-year contract, according to the Sacramento Bee. He replaces Jim Harbaugh, who exited imme- diately after finishing this season with an 8-8 record and a Dec. 28 win over the Arizona Cardinals. "He really identified him- self and sold himself on what he would do to bring this organi- zation together and lead us to a lot of success on the field and off the field," general manager Trent Baalke said. Added Tomsula: "I clearly un- derstand the expectations of the ownership, on and off the field." By Josh Dubow The Associated Press ALAMEDA The Oakland Raiders have officially hired Denver defen- sive coordinator Jack Del Rio as their new head coach. The team announced the hiring Thursday, a day after finalizing the deal to have Del Rio replace interim coach Tony Sparano. A news conference is expected Fri- day. Del Rio becomes Oakland's ninth head coach since the start of the 2003 season. The Raiders have the NFL's worst record in that span, having failed to pro- duce a single winning season or playoff berth. Sparano had been elevated from offensive line coach during the past season to replace the fired Dennis Allen and had hoped to keep the job. Oakland went 3-9 under Sparano after losing the first four games under Allen. "After a thorough interview and evaluation process, we are excited to announce Jack Del Rio as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders," owner Mark Davis said in a statement. "I have no doubt that he will make a significant im- pact and help reach the goal of everyone in this building, which NFL Del Rio hired officially as new Raiders head coach GREEN PAGE 2 49ERS PAGE 2 RAIDERS PAGE 2 SPORTS » redbluffdailynews.com Friday, January 16, 2015 MORE AT FACEBOOK.COM/RBDAILYNEWS AND TWITTER.COM/REDBLUFFNEWS B1
