MARKETING/SALES Hal Nunn ASSOCIATE EDITOR Stephanie Crider PUBLISHER Bill Bowman PUBLISHER'S PEN by BILL BOWMAN Congratulations to the Fox News Network that is celebrating its 15th anniversary this week. Hawking their unique style of TV journalism as "no spin, fair, balanced and unafraid" they let their voices be heard worldwide, being guided by a compass constructed only of the facts. No spin... just the facts and a mantra of "let the people decide" the truth. From its very fi rst year, Fox ratings soared to new heights as viewers embraced this refreshing, unbiased news concept. Fox never looked back or even acknowledged the many other biased and liberal news network shows like CNN and MSNBC that they left in their wake, a bashing from which they never recovered. Well, the success of FNN is no surprise to anyone here at Up & Coming Weekly. We have much in common with the folks at the Fox News Network and since our newspaper is 16-years-old, no one can accuse us of hijacking their format or mimicking their "no spin" philosophies. We too, have experienced and enjoyed the same kind of success locally and are extremely proud and grateful to be a part of this industry in a growing community like Fayetteville. Like the Fox News Network "good things last" and stand the test of time. Up & Coming Weekly has proven itself to be a trusted and stable community newspaper as well as a reliable conduit for local news, views and information here in Fayetteville, Cumberland County and Fort Bragg. We welcome the mix. Liberals, conservatives, Democrats, Republicans or Libertarians, it matters not. We want everyone to have a voice and invite all to contribute. Our editorial staff is deeply committed to the ideals of Fayetteville's Weather Forecast October 14 Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Friday Thursday October 13 Saturday October 15 journalism. Our associate publisher, Janice Burton, fi nds it ironic that she gets letters bashing the paper and her personally for being so liberal. (She is a conservative, but believes in freedom of expression and freedom of the press.) More than once I've heard her on the telephone tell someone, "I can disagree 100 percent with everything you say, but I will be the fi rst to defend your right to say it." Hey, no offense to news celebrity Bill O'Reilly but, Up & Coming Weekly beat them to the punch with the No Spin Zone, as we invited the community to report and opine with the stipulations that their topics were: 1. Relevant to our residents, 2. Impacted the quality of life of the community, and 3. That their name and photo accompany the submission. Minor concessions I'll concede, but a formula that works in a community like ours that is deprived of true local radio and TV coverage. A situation that continues to cripple and curtail our efforts to develop Fayetteville's unique brand. So, again, a hearty congratulations to the Fox News Network for its 15 years of dedicated "no spin" journalism and, a sincere "thank you" to our U&CW readers for our last 16 years. In both cases, the American people have determined what has value. And, things with value are always those that last. So stay tuned. We have plenty more to give. Thank you for reading Up & Coming Weekly. Like Fox, we are fair, balanced and unafraid!
