ByPatriciaMartin Jesussaid,"FollowMe." "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me" (Mat- thew 16:19). Some think this is almost impossible. The Bible gives clear direc- tions for all of life's situa- tions and circumstances, so clear we can conclude that doing otherwise is merely a matter of per- sonal choice. "To deny himself" means putting personal life efforts and inter- ests into kingdom living, rather than living for self- interests. It means pleas- ing God is the top priority of one's life. "To take up his cross" doesn't mean we have to carry some heavy burden, but rather we give up self- centered ambitions. The subject of pleasing God is expressed through- out the Word of God. To me it is like a golden thread tying God's Word together, and bringing clarity concerning God's vision for fruitful living in the lives of His children. "for you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light. (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness and righ- teousness and truth), try- ing to learn what is pleas- ing to the Lord" (Ephe- sians 5:8-10). All seasoned Christians understand we cannot ob- tain victorious living with- out the indwelling Holy Spirit. We have the prom- ise that He is able to give us strength and power to overcome any tempta- tion or trial. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philip- pians 4:13). Our Lord does the changing, unless we decide to change ourselves —- sort of "pulling our- selves up by our own boot- straps." When we begin to "go it alone" because of an inner belief that we are fine without God's help, we are forgetting the fol- lowing Scripture; "For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment" (Isa- iah 64:6). If we are born-again Christians, we know the blood of Jesus has cleansed us of all sins, and we have become saints of God! (See Ro- mans 1:7 and Revelation 5:8.) Amazing isn't it? We can look at our broth- ers and sisters in Christ, and know they are new creations in Christ and saints of God! We are also called a chosen genera- tion, a royal priesthood and a holy nation. "But you are a chosen genera- tion, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own spe- cial people that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness and into His marvelous light" (1 Pe- ter 2:9). "and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, in Him to be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen" (Revelation 1:6). Can those in the body of Christ who are also known as kings and priests unto God, live beneath their calling? We are called to follow Jesus! Does this mean that Christians never sin? No! "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to for- give us our sins and to cleanse us from all un- righteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us" (1 John 1:8-10). Anyone who chooses to walk in the light of God's word does not fail to see his own sin- fulness. If we deny our own sinfulness we are de- ceiving ourselves and full of false pride. When the Lord saved me in 1963, I recall read- ing 1 John 3:9. "Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed re- mains in him, and he can- not sin, because he has been born of God." Know- ing I was far from never having a wrong thought or behavior, I was terribly concerned about my spiri- tual state. A call was made to my pastor, and he ex- plained the full meaning of this Scripture. Taken from the NLT: "Those who have been born into God's family do not make a prac- tice of sinning because God's life is in them. So they can't keep on sinning, because they are children of God." Yes, we are called to follow Jesus, and when we love Him we do not practice sin, but righteous- ness. "He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me" (John 14:21). Plights in the Christians life can, through obedi- ence, be destroyed by the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. Jesus is the Word of God! "In the be- ginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). How won- derful to know we can fol- low Jesus, who is life eter- nal. He is God's gift to us. Will we follow him? PatriciaMartinisasea- soned intercessor who leads the Jehovah Rapha Ministry of prayer and healing in Red Bluff. She was herself healed of can- cer some years back. GOD TALK The plight of Christians in following Jesus By Regina Garcia Cano The Associated Press RAPID CITY, S.D. The first Jews to settle in what is now South Dakota estab- lished themselves in Dead- wood during the Gold Rush more than 150 years ago, finding a niche selling hard- ware, groceries, dry goods and more. By 1920, the state was home to some 1,300 Jews. That community has dwindled to an estimated 390 people — less than a tenth of 1 percent of South Dakota's popula- tion. No state has fewer. It's a small, but tightly knit flock that makes do without a permanent rabbi and worries too few children are coming along to sustain it. "Nobody wants to be the last one to turn the lights out," said Steve Benn, a neonatal doctor who serves as lay leader at Synagogue of the Hills in Rapid City. He orches- trates bar mitzvah ceremo- nies, performs ritual cir- cumcisions and conducts funeral services. The reasons for the de- cline vary. Some mem- bers stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in west- ern South Dakota trans- ferred elsewhere and took their families, some doctors working on Indian reserva- tions were eventually reas- signed and other Jews sim- ply left in search of better opportunities in more pop- ulous areas. "Anybody that has moved here or moved away ... it's always been professionally driven as opposed to other reasons," Benn said of the Rapid City congregation, noting it's not because of any feeling of isolation. There are two active syn- agogues, one in Sioux Falls and another in Rapid City. A third synagogue in Ab- erdeen sometimes hosts services and Torah study groups. Rapid City's syn- agogue was once a fam- ily home that was donated to the community by Stan Adelstein, a state senator who occasionally officiates weddings. South Dakota is the only state without a permanent rabbi, which Benn says is due to "market forces." "If the synagogue can afford to hire a rabbi and there's a large enough need for one, they (synagogues) make their own arrange- ments," he said. South Dakota's last rabbi, Stephen Forstein, arrived in 1979 after the rabbi at the Sioux Falls synagogue died. Forstein was a part- time rabbi who also oper- ated a lighting supply busi- ness that took him around the state. "I'm out to sell a product, be it like light bulbs or Ju- daism, and I make no bones about it — I'm selling Juda- ism," he told The Associated Press in November 1980. But Forstein moved to Michigan years later. Since then, the community has been served by lay leaders and student rabbis from He- brew Union College in Cin- cinnati who travel to the state regularly. Young Hasidic rabbinical students who are part of a global community-outreach training program known as "The Roving Rabbis" also come to the state every summer and at other times during the year, making in- home visits. Last year, they even arranged a bar mitz- vah for a boy who had just turned 13.
