The Associated Press VENTURA A1-year-oldboy was found stabbed to death Friday, and his father, who was also found with stab wounds, is the lone sus- pect, police said. The father called 911 about 1:45 a.m. to say his child was dead at their home, and when officers ar- rived he told them where to find the child then slumped to the ground, police said. The child, who was found on a bed with a sin- gle stab wound, was de- clared dead at the scene, Ventura police Cpl. An- thony Snow said. The father was taken to a hospital, where he un- derwent surgery and was moved to intensive care, police said. Police Cmdr. Darin Schindler told the Ven- tura County Star that the father is "a suspect in our eyes because he is some- body who was last with the child alive. It doesn't mean he's going to be ar- rested. It doesn't mean we've said he's done this. But he is somebody we sus- pect has information about the crime." The father had sep- arated from the child's mother and had shared custody, Schindler said. CRIME Dad a suspect in boy's fatal stabbing The Associated Press GRAND TERRACE A secu- rity guard died confront- ing a gunman firing at a crowd outside a Southern California roller rink where about 200 people, including many children, gathered for an all-night New Year's Eve party, authorities and wit- nesses said Friday. "He saved a bunch of kids and families, no doubt in my mind," said Michael Marcoly, a driver who was sitting in his big-rig in the parking lot when the gun- fire broke out at Cal Skate in the city of Grand Terrace, between Riverside and San Bernardino. The guard, Richard Wil- liamson, 48, of Riverside, was killed and two other men were injured, the San Bernardino County Sher- iff's Department said in a statement. Another secu- rity guard and a man were expected to survive. A day after the shooting, detectives were asking for the public's help in seeking suspects, and no details on a motive had been released. Marcoly told KNBC-TV he thought the melee was part of the skating party before he realized the gun- man was firing toward the crowd. "At first, I thought it was just people celebrating the New Year, firing guns," he said. "Then, when it hit my truck, it rocked my truck." The other victims were a 28-year-old and a 22-year- old, the sheriff's statement said. One was treated at the scene, and the other was hospitalized. Their names have not been released. The skating rink said in a statement that it's working with authorities. Its web- site still had posted an ad- vertisement for the event, billed as "All-Night Skate NYE 2015 Glow Party." "Our prayers are with the officer and who was in- volved and those who wit- nessed this tragic event," the statement said. Williamson was the owner of Big Will's Security Services, the security firm that provided the guards for the party, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. Twenty-four-year-old Steven Michael Lucas has been arrested and booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of invol- untary manslaughter and discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner. Sacramento County sher- iff's deputies responded to several calls early Thurs- day morning reporting a woman in her 20s had been shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex. She was rushed to a hospital, but later died. Sheriff's spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman de- scribed the incident as a cel- ebratory act that resulted in the accidental shooting. While drenching rain will fall from the Ohio Valley to the Carolinas and much of Virginia, ice will occur over part of the interior mid-Atlantic, central Appalachians and the Midwest at the onset of the storm. Thunderstorms may become locally severe late in the day over the lower Mississippi Valley as warm air builds farther east over the Deep South. As colder air sweeps in from the west, a change to ice and snow is in store for portions of Texas and the Great Plains.
