"By adding evening hours to routes 5, 8, and 15, travel will be enhanced from downtown to north Fayetteville," said Transit Director Randy Hume. "Connections are also being added to Cape Fear Valley satellite locations and western portions of the service area. Funding for these improvements was provided by the Fayetteville City Council in the City's Fiscal Year 2011-2012 Budget. These changes are only a few improvements citizens will experience as FAST continues to enhance citizens' travel options one step at a time." Senior Centercontinued toiletries for older adults who were affected by Fayetteville's April 16 tornado event program, which was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Silver Links, allows participants to experience world cultural displays and entertainment and sample native foods, all while never leaving the community. The North Carolina Recreation and Parks Association Arts and Humanities Award is given out annually. The award is given to a program that has best achieved its goals for its participants and impacted the arts and humanities within the community. Nominations are received from all parks and recreation departments across the state. An Awards Committee reviews the nominations and determines the winner. Renee Burks' Legacy Lives on With Festival Park When Renee Burks came to work for the City of Fayetteville Parks & Recreation Department in the early with her. The Baton Rouge native's favorite saying was, "Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez," or "Let the Good Times Roll." Considering that expression was her trademark, it made perfect sense that she was Festival Park Coordinator until her passing in February 2010. Anyone can honor Burks' legacy by taking a moment to view a plaque, which sits atop a stone column the Fayetteville City Council unanimously approved dedicating the bridge in Burks' honor. Jackie Tuckey, a friend and co-worker of Renee's since 1993, worked with Burks in the Parks & Recreation Department. Tuckey recollects Burks sending messages and emails to staff members and friends with the saying "Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez" attached. Tuckey believes that Burks would want people to remember that about her and would feel humbled by the Festival Park bridge dedication. "Renee was never one to look for accolades or recognition," she said. "The things she did in her job and through her church were out of a generous spirit and the goodness of her heart." Free Parking continued to rain and wet conditions during the foundation installation. Due to the project being under budget, the City was able to include all of the project elements that were bid as alternates. Some of these alternates involve longer lead time items, as well as construction activity scheduling that are resulting in a longer schedule than originally anticipated.
