F CUSOn Senior Center Program Wins Arts and Humanities FAST Adds More Evening Service, FASTtrac Expands The Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) continues to improve and implement changes that are outlined in the system's Transit Development Plan (TDP). FAST added evening services on Routes 5, 8, and 15 started Monday, Sept. 26. After that date, extended evening services will be available on seven of FAST's 12 daily bus routes. Route 5 provides service along Ramsey Street, between the downtown Transfer Center and Stacey Weaver Drive. Route 8 provides service between the Transfer Center and Cape Fear Valley Medical Center via Southern Avenue and Owen Drive. Route 15 provides service between Cross Creek Mall and Cape Fear Valley Medical Center via Skibo Road, Bunce Road, and Raeford Road. This route also serves the Hollywood Heights neighborhood. The FASTtrac van service for disabled individuals will also be expanded to provide trips within ¾ miles of these bus routes during the evening service hours. Planned improvements to extend Route 9 to the Cape Fear Valley North Pavilion at Ramsey Street and Andrews Road will be implemented at a future date, continued next page Award A Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation Senior Center program has been selected as the North Carolina Recreation and Parks Association's Arts and Humanities Award winner. Silver Links – A Timeless Connection Through Community and Culture was selected for the award, which was presented at the North Carolina Recreation and Parks Association/South Carolina Recreation and Parks Association conference in Charleston, S.C. Silver Links is an umbrella for programs geared toward connecting older adults with various areas of mental, physical, social, and emotional needs. These connections are made through recreational opportunities such as trips, social gatherings, lifelong learning experiences, and acts of advocacy. Programs which fall under Silver Links are: Hands thru Time, Creating Outdoor Recreation Experiences (CORE), Seniors of Service (SOS), Generations On Line and Around the World. picnics, talent shows, karaoke, and visits to local elementary schools trips to coastal lighthouses, white water rafting Cape Fear Valley Health Cancer Center, a food drive for people and animals, Dial-a-Friend (telephone reassurance program), and the Thinking of You Towel campaign, which sought donations of towels and continued next page in Fayetteville The All-America City of Fayetteville provides plenty of free downtown parking for citizens to enjoy the historic downtown. Free all- day parking is available in 442 downtown spaces. Three-hour on-street parking 20 11 Free Parking Abounds provides 145 spaces, two-hour free on-street parking provides 358 spaces, and two-hour free parking lots provide 149 spaces. On nights and weekends more than 1,900 free parking spaces are available. This year, the City of Fayetteville has been working diligently toward even further increasing available parking in the downtown area. The completion of a new parking deck on Franklin Street has been eagerly anticipated by businesses and consumers alike. Unfortunately, the City has been informed by the contractor, LeChase, that the parking deck will not meet its originally projected date of completion. Jan. 10, 2012 is now the new target date for completion of the Franklin Street Parking Deck. The delay has very little to do with the crane incident this summer, but is more closely associated with a delay from the elevator contractor. LeChase is experiencing longer lead times than anticipated on a few critical items in the glass panels for the glass-backed elevator cabs, as well as storefront materials. During installation of the foundation, unsuitable soil conditions were encountered, which resulted in additional time required for completion.
