MARKETING/SALES Hal Nunn ASSOCIATE EDITOR Stephanie Crider PUBLISHER Bill Bowman INSIDE PUBLISHER'S PEN by JANICE BURTON Like many in our community, I tuned in to Extreme Home Makeover a couple of Sundays ago to watch their take on their visit to our fair city. I followed their visit here via television, the newspaper and Facebook, and had high hopes for the show. I thought the spotlight on the home for homeless women veterans was touching, and I was moved by the plight of these women. Today's economy and environment are tough, and many fi nd themselves in situations that are not of their choosing. When that happens, it is awesome to have a resource to help you get back on your feet, and to give you the breathing space to do that. I worry though whether what was built will be sustainable. If you have followed the show at all, you will know that many of the families who have had homes built have either lost their homes because they could not keep up the mortgage or have been unable to pay the insurance or electric bills on the much bigger, more expensive homes. In recent shows, we have seen banks paying off the mortgage and the designers putting in green elements to save on the cost of electricity. We didn't see that in this show. The new home in Fayetteville is easily twice the size of the home that stood there before. That means the insurance doubles, the electricity bill doubles, and if they bring in more families, the water bill and the food bill doubles. Is there funding available to cover these costs? It is my hope that the focus put on the home will ensure that there is. But in reality, that isn't always the case. I was a little disappointed in the lack of attention that was given to local businesses and people who donated items, time and money. Yes, Sears, a national chain that is featured on every episode of Home Makeover, got its fi ve minutes, and the builder (who truly deserved it) got his time, too. But what about the Fayetteville's Weather Forecast October 7 Thursday October 6 Saturday October 8 Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Friday countless volunteers who made it happen. Where was their fi ve minutes? I know where most of it went. It went to the First Lady, Michelle Obama. I know that having the fi rst lady at the center of the show brought a lot of prestige to Home Makeover. But what else did she bring to the table? It is my understanding that she was in Fayetteville for about half a day. Other than taping interviews and yelling, "Move that bus," what did she really contribute? It was tough for many in our community to hear over and over how much the Obama administration, and in particular Mrs. Obama, are committed to our military and its families, when decisions made daily in the White House contradict those words. Over the past year, the Obama administration has fl oated many plans that will in fact hurt military families: increased costs for Tricare, freezing of military pay raises, slashing of military retirement, lowering annual cost of living increases for retirees and those on disability. Don't even get me started on the impact on the federal workers who support the military. Did anyone think saying the words "we support our military" would override the actions of the administration? Did anyone in Washington really think that would fl y? For me personally, and for many I have talked with over the past couple of weeks, the show was little more than a PSYOP action trying to convince this community that the men and women who serve in our military are important to the administration. Actions speak louder than words, and what they were selling — nobody was buying. JANICE BURTON, Associate Publisher.
