Corning 34 Oroville 7 By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor CORNING — During a night of festivities, the Corn- ing football team did nothing to distract from the celebra- tion. The Cardinals put away Oroville early, Friday, and cruised to a 34-7 victory on Homecoming to improve to 3- 2 on the season. Ryan Holland returned two punts for touchdowns and rushed for another and J.D. Whited topped the century mark with 109 yards on the ground. Corning dominated the first half and it started early. Fullback Colton Conoly led the Cardinals on a 74-yard drive to start the game and rushed home the first score from 11 yards out 1:39 into the contest. Conoly finished the game with five carries for 58 yards. Corning forced Oroville to go three-and-out and went right back to work on offense. This time it was Whited punching it in from two yards out and the Cardinals were up 14-0. The teams exchanged punts from there and Corning was even dominating that aspect of the game. Nathan Fultz kicked a 57-yard punt to win the field position battle for Corning. The Cardinals rushed the Tigers' first two punts of the game, but on the third they dropped back into coverage and it paid off. Holland fielded the punt and broke up field 69 yards with perfect blocking in front of him for a 22-0 Cardinals lead. Corning would add one more score before the half when they completed a 12- play, 60-yard drive with a Hol- land quarterback sneak from a yard out to take a 28-0 half- time lead. The Cardinals won the field position battle again to start the third quarter when Fultz pinned the Tigers on their own 5-yard line with another per- fect kick. The Tigers were forced to punt from their own end zone and Holland fielded the ball on the Oroville 41-yard line and brought it in for another Cardi- nals' score. Corning went with sopho- more Chayce Maday at quar- terback from there on out as they found playing time for everyone on the roster. Oroville got its only score of the game when Justin York beat the Cardinals' second string defense for a 79-yard touchdown run. Besides his strong punting performance, Fultz finished the game with seven carries for 48 yards. John Lowe had 40 yards on four carries. Thomas Profant had 22 yards on five carries. and Thomas Lowe had 17 yards on four carries. Holland carried five times for 23 yards and completed a pair of 2-yard passes — one each to Whited and Conoly. Cody Long was in on a pair of sacks for the Cardinals. It was Oroville's 22nd con- secutive loss and their 40th straight defeat to teams other than Las Plumas. While Corning didn't over- look Oroville, it didn't take long after the game before the Cardinals turned their atten- tion to next week. Corning opens up Northern Athletic League play with a road trip to West Valley. Coach John Studer said the keys for the Cardinals entering league play will be getting healthy, eliminating their penalties and continuing to open up games with strong starts. Corning should get a piece of good news this week as senior running back Ezekiel Rodriguez is expected to be cleared to play following a preseason injury. With a league that seems to be on the upswing, the Cardi- nals are in for four tough weeks. "Coming form last year I thought our whole league was down a little bit," Studer said. "I think every game is going to be a dog fight. I think every- one has improved and some of the teams have improved greatly." That appears to be the case with West Valley. The Eagles are 3-2 to start the season, with the losses coming to Enterprise and Sutter. West Valley and Corning switched division standings this year when the Eagles were moved up to Division-I. Taylor Figgs played a strong game at quarterback for Red Bluff scoring a rushing touch- down and buying time with his legs to find Ty Smith in the end zone for another touchdown. Smith also had a rushing touchdown. A Michael Gonzales blitz led to a 60-yard fumble return for a touchdown from Brandon Ragone that tied the score 14-14 in the second quarter. However West Valley's misdi- rection in its run game gave the Spartans fits. "We were looking for ball car- riers instead of tackling ball car- riers," coach John Miller said. Miller said Red Bluff's offense remains a positive for the team as they continue their road trip with a trip to Susanville to face Lassen. "We're playing good competi- tion," he said. Red Bluff is 0-5. Mercy Butte Valley 28 52 Matt Misener rushed for 207 yards and a touchdown in a 52-28 Mercy loss. Alejandro Guerrero and Jordan Stasinowsky also scored for the Warriors.
